Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle Earth – How to Train Tier 4 Troops

, ,

Since the Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle Earth game has a tendency to introduce game play elements that you can’t directly access at first, or at least without purchasing chests that contain those items, there’s been some confusion as to how to train tier 4 troops. It wasn’t actually possible to directly train tier 4 troops until runecrafting buildings up to level 11 became available. Even still it takes some work to make your city capable of producing tier 4 troops and they are impressive. I’m not a big fan of tier 3 troops when compared to tier 2 troops because of the upkeep and training time increase but the tier 4 troops are pretty impressive. The might for tier 4 troops is THREE times the might for tier 3 troops and the upkeep only increases by 8. Here are the stats for tier 4 troops:

  • Attack: 5 stars
  • Life: 5 stars
  • Speed: 900
  • Load: 20
  • Might: 72
  • Upkeep: 24

It does feel like there’s a pay to play wall since you can’t runecraft your buildings until you raise them to level 10. In order to raise them to level 10 you need a hobbit building crew and they’re not easy to acquire. You’ll be able to produce tier 4 troops once you raise your barracks level to runecrafted level 4, 7 and 11 for foot, ranged and mounted troops, respectively. Those aren’t the only requirements and once you runecraft your barracks for the first time you’ll be able to see what’s required, as well as a new tab being added to the barracks screen for advanced units.

photo(18)

So you’ll need a lot of hobbit building crews, 11 to be exact. And that’s because to raise your barracks to runecrafted level 11 you’ll have to runecraft the following buildings: Home, Keep, City Wall, Forge, Stables, Armory, Academy, Farm, Quarry and Mine. You’ll need a lot of forge runes that can be acquired in the campaigns to runecraft up to level 4, Ascension Runes to runecraft to level 7, and you’ll need Master Runes to go past level 9, which can be acquired by exchanging Forge Runes in the Sage Tower. The order in which you’ll runecraft your buildings will be restricted by the requirements of some of them, however you receive an immediate boost to your kingdom if you runecraft the farm, quarry, or mine first since you can increase your resources. Next would be barracks, home, Keep and City Wall since they have immediate benefits as well. So yeah, tier 4 troops are great but it’ll require a lot of patience if you don’t already have your buildings and research at level 10 or above already.

You’ll also need Hobbit Runecrafters to level up your barracks to runecrafted level 11. 5 to be exact because you’ll need one each for your Keep, Quarry, Mine, Home and finally your Barracks. You can’t level up your Barracks without the other 4 being leveled up first. These can be won in a similar manner as hobbit building crews or purchased in the shop. Once you have everything leveled up you can produce all possible trainable troops.

UPDATE:  I’ve been asked about required Research topics and yes each tier 4 troop has research requirements before you can train them. Below is a list showing the lvl 10 research needed for each

  • Supply Caravans – Siege Weapons, Saddlebags
  • Boar Archers – Siege Weapons, Horseshoes
  • Dwarf Phalanx – Honed Blades, Siege Weapons
  • Catapult Wagon – Fletching, Siege Weapons

Can t4 troops be trained in lake town or do they have to be trained in another city?

They have to be trained in another city. Right now only basic troops and tactical troops can be trained in Laketown

11 Hobbit building crews?!?! sheesh, I haven’t been able to win one, I purchased a small amount of mithril, upgraded my keep and bought a few chests and all gone. Did you achieve this by buying mithril and HBC’s? or were you fortunate enough to win some to help offset the cost. I love this game and I don’t mind spending real money on great games like this, but this may be that line in the sand I don’t cross, too much moola!

I was lucky enough to win a few hobbit crews from the daily chance and not just the premium one. I haven’t received any that way in a long time. I get one a month from opening the chests from the daily login calendar so even if you can’t play on a particular day just login briefly. I have purchased some in the past when there was a half off sale but now I know you can earn mithril in the game where you buy it by scrolling to the bottom and choosing “Earn free Mithril.” Some tasks could be to watch an ad or create an account on a website but there are new ones all the time

When did the game begin requiring a Hobbit Runecrafter to runecraft buildings? They just began allowing this in Linor149 with other stipulations like it can only be done in city #3.

Hobbit Building Crews have been required since last year to go from level 9 to level 10 and then runecraft buildings, at least in Fili50. Hobbit Runecrafters are only required to go from runecrafted level 10 to runecrafted level 11. And this applies to all cities in Fili50

Do you have to have lvl 10 reserch? What are they? And do
all 10 buildings have to be 10 or is it some 10 and some 11?

Yes, lvl 10 research does exist and it’s the same research topics that already appear in your Academy. Lvl 10 is the max. There are no lvl 11 buildings because after 10 it becomes runecrafted lvl 1 and then counts up again. The requirements to reach research lvl 10 for the different topics vary but for all of them you need to raise your academy to lvl 10. So, for example, to reach Arbors lvl 10 you have to have a lvl 10 academy and lumber mill first.

Hmm, it’s possible it didn’t hit all servers yet because I know Ascension Runes weren’t available on a second server I played on until recently. Which server are you on?

I have same, in Thorin158 -> “runecrafting coming soon” on the button. Which is greyed out. Soon november…and I have a zillion runes for no use. Almost all 3 citys (4th is not yet available here) all buildings at lvl 10. And all research…not much more to do here, soon bored out 🙁

Wow, runecrafting has been available on my server for a year now. Hold on to those runes because you will need a ton of them to reach the max runecrafted level. And that’s because you’ll have to convert them to Ascension runes and Master runes at the highest levels. Do you have Gem mining or Goblin caverns yet?

Thanks for clearing up all the questions about typecasting. This is probably the best T4 troop guide I have read yet. It actually explains all of the other buildings needed upgraded instead of just talking about barracks.

The Great Hall is one of the few buildings that can’t be runecrafted.

It’s just the term used for buildings over level 10. So instead of saying level 11 it’s runecrafted level 1

They cost 3,000 gold per troop to produce. And the upkeep is 24 per troop.

Hi if I were to build a runcrafted 11 barracks in city 1, can I train tier 4 in city 2? or will it the training be restricted to only one city? Thanks.

    • Kareem Ali - February 17, 2014 7:50 AM

Training tier 4 troops would be restricted to the city you have the runecrafted barracks in

So you only really need 1 hobbit building crew, but can have 10 others to increase production and population to make it easier?

        Reply
        • Kareem Ali - March 11, 2014 10:36 PM

No, you need the other hobbit crews because you can’t level up the barracks to runecrafted level 11 without raising the levels of the other required buildings over 10 as well. So for example, to raise your barracks to *7 one of the requirements is to have a home at *7
