Prototype Steam Machines Specs

Valve has released spec details on its Prototype Steam Machines that will be used as part of its upcoming beta test for them. As I wrote before, there will be different Steam Machines used for this test so Valve can see how they perform with different configurations. The CPU will be Intel, and the GPU will be Nvidia, which isn’t surprising, and I wonder how much this could help the Nvidia Shield, if at all, since it’s big on streaming PC games. Without further ado, here are the complete specs for the Prototype Steam Machines:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770, Core i5-4570, or Core i3
  • GPU: Nvidia Titan, GTX78-, GTX760, or GTX660
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR3-1600 for CPU, and 3 GB DDR5 for GPU
  • Hard Drive: 1 TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
  • Power Supply:  Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
  • Dimensions: 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high

As you can see, Valve wasn’t kidding when they stated that some of these Steam Machines will be very high-end, and if you don’t know, the Nvidia Titan is not only the fastest GPU out there right now but by itself costs twice as much as the Xbox One. So I’m hoping just like everyone else who is trying to be a beta tester to get one of the prototype machines with a Titan inside. But not all of them will be as expensive or as powerful. The lowest being the GTX660 and that’s still a really good GPU. And again, these are just the prototype machines and you’ll be able to configure the actual Steam Machines when they’re released. The size is roughly the same as the Xbox One and PS4, with either the length or width slightly different. There is currently no completed case design so it’ll all be pretty standard for now. With every new detail that is revealed I am more intrigued by the Steam machine and what Valve is attempting to accomplish.
