Black Panther #1 Preview
I’m sure I was one of millions of people who saw the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer excited about the new footage of Black Panther in all his glory. And I’ve been on a high since seeing Black Panther’s entrance with the Infinity Gauntlet in Secret Wars. However, I’m looking forward even more to the start of the new series in April written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze. I’m particularly excited about this being written by Ta-Nehisi Coates because of his acclaimed writing, his personal experience and his breadth of knowledge of pertinent social, cultural and historical issues. So I’m excited about the possibilities with T’Challa, king of the African nation Wakanda, the most advanced nation on Earth and what Coates can do in light of events in the world today. And the synopsis for the opening story arc seems to capture that potential perfectly as T’Challa is faced with a threat unlike any before: the most serious threat from within.
Coates asked a simple question in the Atlantic, where he’s a national correspondent: “Can a good man be a king, and would an advanced society tolerate a monarch?” This question will be addressed when the Black Panther goes against The People, a superhuman terrorist group that has sparked a violent uprising in Wakanda. How will he respond to this and what does this mean for the future of Wakanda? These questions and more will be answered starting April 6th when Black Panther #1 hits the stands.
