Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #8

  • The good

Gilad's learning in the labyrinth. Potential connection to Kalam's life

  • The bad

Kalam not being able to tell Gilad an important message. Squandered opportunity to deepen story?

  • The ugly

  • Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #8 continues with Gilad learning more about the inner workings of the Labyrinth. It opens up with Sovereign’s team reading all of Gilad’s vital signs as he dies in order to learn his secret of immortality. They’re collecting all the data, and once he dies they return his body to the lab waiting for him to be revived so they can see if anything of note takes place. When Gilad wakes in the afterlife he’s aware that the Sovereign knows he’s the Immortal Warrior and hurries to leave despite his family wanting him to stay longer. He tells his wife about the predicament he’s in so she understands why it’s imperative he hurries. When he’s trying to leave his son Kalam needs to tell him an urgent message but Gilad is gone before Kalam is able to convey it to his father. When Gilad returns to the land of the living the cycle repeats. Can Gilad break this cycle before Sovereign discovers his secret? And what is the urgent message Kalam needs to tell Gilad?

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #8
Last issue’s shocking conclusion was so bold that I honestly felt it could mean a huge change to the Eternal Warrior’s mythology in terms of the way his immortality is viewed. It didn’t feel gimmicky since it fit into the story of Sovereign, an immortal in his own right, conducting experiments in order to learn more. And even though Gilad’s immortality was explained in Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer and the start of this series, I admit I was curious about what Sovereign’s experiments would uncover. This issue did handle it in an entertaining manner but I wish it capitalized on an opportunity with Kalam to make it more engrossing overall.

It was a cool start with Sovereign’s team analyzing data showing how thoroughly the capture and dissection of Gilad was planned. I really got into that because I wondered what the outcome would be. And when Gilad was shown waking up in the afterlife with his family it made me feel like the time devoted at the start of this series to that story line was worth it. So the entire situation was intense with Gilad and Sovereign racing against the clock for opposing reasons. The brief moment Gilad spent explaining the situation to his wife made it all the more enjoyable because of the brilliance of it all. And when Kalam tried to stop Gilad to give him a message I was very excited thinking about how this story arc might tie together everything from the start of the series.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #8
And then the cycle repeated…over 40 times. And it made me wonder if Kalam’s message was so significant, which some of the return trips seemed to imply, why Gilad’s family just didn’t blurt it out while he was getting ready or find some way to block his path to deliver the message. It didn’t make the message feel more suspenseful because it just felt slightly frustrating knowing how engrossing the story was to this point only to be halted. The action was good but mainly when Gilad would face a new obstacle that he would utilize to understand how to fight back in the Labyrinth. And the conclusion was such a rush that I temporarily forgot the ordeal with Kalam’s message and now I can’t wait to see Gilad’s next actions.

    SUMMARY

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #8 is an intense continuation of the Labyrinth story line tying together elements from Gilad’s resurrection process with an intriguing take on a cat and mouse game with Sovereign. The way Sovereign’s no-nonsense approach to collecting data on Gilad’s repeated deaths is portrayed is perfect in conveying his true goals and raises his stature as a sociopathic kidnapper. Kalam’s attempt to give Gilad a message in the midst of this isn’t explored other than as failed attempts coming off as either a distraction or a squandered opportunity. However, the conclusion is an exciting development that has me looking forward to next issue even more.
