Unity #21

  • The good

Story is still entertaining and has some great lines. Twist towards end finally adds some story progression

  • The bad

Still an overall long time to get to any new developments with Warmonger during this story arc. Not a huge fan of artwork for current events

  • The ugly

  • Unity #21 continues with Warmonger launching her attack on Unity by targeting Gilad so none can stand in her way. It opens up with her telling a story from 1955 during the Cold War, which was a difficult time for her because she’s always preferred the intensity of open warfare. During this time she disguised herself as a housewife to the key developer of the microchip technology in order to get close to the U.S. military industrial complex. After doing this for some time she would make her move during a backyard BBQ when a number of high-level U.S. military personnel were present. She would poison the food just enough to make them tremendously ill and fully aware of the fact they’ve been poisoned. Her purpose was to pretend like she was a Russian spy sent on a mission to do this in order to create open war between the two countries. What she didn’t expect was to be met by the Shademen, who were watching her the entire time and eventually managed to take her down and imprison her again. Gilad finds her stories fascinating and patiently wants to hear more. He asks her if she has a point for telling him these stories and she says she’s just telling them because they’re cool. Gilad already knows Warmonger will attack him, and Warmonger isn’t even attempting to hide that fact. But does Unity have a plan that Warmonger has failed to see or have they just underestimated her?

The routine with the Warmonger based on these past few issues is clear at this point. She tells a story from her past that led to her capture and subsequent escape, and then attacks the Unity member listening to this story. And she’s made it clear that she has to eliminate them early on so they can’t stop her plans to start WWIII. This issue pretty much followed the same format, and even though the Shademen didn’t resonate enough for me to want to see them make another appearance in the future, I found this story to be entertaining in some way. I was trying to figure out why it was, especially when Gilad asked her if she had a purpose to weaving this tale (reflecting my sentiments about last issue). And when Warmonger answered that she’s telling him “because it’s just @*&*%$@ cool” that hit the nail on the head. It also helped that this issue was much more enjoyable and had appearances from other known characters in her flashbacks, such as Bloodshot. And seeing a more intricate plot from Warmonger during the Cold War, or at least the things she takes credit for causing in her boastful stories, was more engrossing. But this issue also had something the previous issues didn’t, and that was a purpose to all of these elaborate stories Warmonger would tell. I won’t give anything away but there was finally a light shown at the end of the tunnel due to a twist that made the entire arc seem more intriguing due to the revelation this issue. I don’t know what the ultimate answer is for Warmonger but based on this issue I would assume it’ll be pretty enjoyable.

    SUMMARY

Unity #21 is an entertaining ride that makes the overall story arc more intriguing with the revelation at the end of this issue. Despite the Warmonger’s routine being the same as the previous 2 issues, the flashbacks this time around are more entertaining, and the lines Warmonger uses to justify telling them fit perfectly in shaping the tone of this story arc. I’m still not a huge fan of the artwork for the current events but there aren’t many panels with it. So I can’t wait to see how Warmonger will be dealt with one last time.
