Unity #19

  • The good

Great storytelling complete with character development and intense action. Exciting, new villain living up to her name so far

  • The bad

No clue how she figured out (spoiler removed)

  • The ugly

  • Unity #19 has the team facing off against a new enemy, Warmonger, who is intent on making herself known before they even get the opportunity to target her. So she introduces herself to a willing audience and she starts from the beginning stating that she was born around 1900 B.C.E. in a cave. Her father was some kind of demon but she was on her own from birth and all she could remember was fighting. So even at 8 years old she was accustomed to fighting in wars but instead of being afraid she loved it. She wasn’t an innocent bystander but the instigator of the war and all the tribes fighting viewed her as a good luck charm. But she wasn’t just a manipulator as she was capable of taking down the biggest brute singlehandedly. However, instead of killing him she left him incapacitated and that would only have his tribe come after her. She thrived off of conflict, hence the name Warmonger, but eventually she was able to succeed over all of them. Over millennia she was able to manipulate other wars while also taking out those hunting her. But what war is she seeking to start in the modern world? And can Unity stop her and succeed where others have failed for millennia?

I have to admit that at the end of last issue when she was introduced that I wasn’t impressed with Warmonger….at all. That was due to the fact that she just appeared to be a loud character with a baseball bat claiming to be able to start WWIII. So I honestly didn’t know what to expect for this story arc but I didn’t have my hopes up high. But after reading this issue I’m pretty excited for this story arc, and I can’t understand why her introduction last issue was so weak in comparison. This issue started off with her backstory, and it wasn’t just her fighting in a war at 8 with superhuman physical strength but her mentality during it that made me think she could be an intriguing villain. And then when more was shown when a team with extraordinary powers came after her in the middle ages I was all in and ready to see what her plan was in modern times. The majority of this issue is Warmonger narrating these events so it’s just her perspective of everything that took place. But her narrating was entertaining, witty, and pretty intense at times. And Matt Kindt keeping the identity of the audience secret for the majority of this issue with just small statements at times worked extremely well at the conclusion of it. I don’t expect the rest of the story arc to be in the same format, and I don’t think it would work so well again if repeated next issue, but it doesn’t need to be because this issue was successful in setting the stage for this story arc, introducing the character and raising the stakes tremendously. And as a result, justified the name of the character. I started this story arc with low expectations and now I can’t wait for the next issue.

    SUMMARY

Unity #19 is a solid and entertaining issue that does a superb job in introducing a new and exciting villain. I was not feeling the character at all in the brief appearance last issue but now I just want to see more especially considering the last sequence. This issue is a masterful buildup to what could be expected based on Warmonger’s backstory even though I’m not sure how she figured out something no one else could. (No spoilers). However, after seeing her capabilities I’m definitely looking forward to the next issue and seeing how this story arc unfolds. All I know is that Unity will have its hands full, and it should be good.
