Unity #0

  • The good

Memorable characters and Gilad's narration/letter commenting on these events. Artwork.

  • The bad

Starts off slowly like a typical World War I story

  • The ugly

  • Unity #0 recounts the tale of Gilad fighting during World War I as part of a joint experimental task force between the U.S. and Great Britain known as UNIT Y.This unit was tapped for one vital mission that would end the war and change the course of history. It opens up with Gilad talking to one of his squadmates named Breaker regarding a machine the latter built that supposedly could predict the outcome of anything it’s asked. But one doesn’t need a machine to know that their next and last mission will also be their most dangerous, and the odds of them all making it out alive are slim at best. There’s a total of 4 of them, Gilad, Breaker, Dell and Alpha, and they all have a specific role on the team. Gilad, the Eternal Warrior is the leader; Breaker is actually a pacifist and doesn’t get involved in the combat but serves many other purposes; Dell provides aerial support with her technologically superior arsenal; and Alpha, the fearless warrior with the blood of the ancient lion running through his veins. They’re all from different backgrounds but they get tasked with handling the special missions, such as freeing prisoners of war from a heavily guarded camp. But this final mission involves stopping an unknown object heading towards England as an act of desperation on the part of Germany. And since secrecy is paramount, this unit couldn’t even receive the proper public accolades for stopping Germany’s final plan so even if they succeed, will they become nothing more than a unit long forgotten?

I can’t say that I was looking forward to this issue as much as I was X-O Manowar #0 since it wasn’t about the current team but I was intrigued by its premise. And it started off as a typical World War I story with superheroes fighting the Germans and Gilad serving as the narrator. And the introduction of each character was interesting, and they were diverse enough to stand out in this situation. This much was acknowledged as they were connected to a greater ideal of peace among nations, and a war to “end all wars.” And the artwork by Cary Nord created an ambiance that was perfect for this flashback story, which would start off as typical but start to gain a life of its own. There was an ominous tone to the story once it was stated that this unit would have one final mission. And it’s not that this tone made the story compelling, Matt Kindt’s writing actually made each character memorable and this fit Gilad’s narration/letter that regardless of the outcome their valor will live on. So what was compelling was giving each action they performed during this mission meaning. And considering Gilad is the Eternal Warrior and has seen so many wars, this was tied into his backstory in an impressive way and not with a gimmicky message. UNIT Y may not have possessed the sheer power that the current Unity team does but they didn’t lack in heart or courage, and that’s why their story will live on.

    SUMMARY

Unity #0 is a compelling story that successfully captures the foundation that Unity is built on, and shows the need for them throughout different periods of time. The story got off to a somewhat slow start and felt like a typical World War I story with added superheroes but each character became memorable as events unfolded and Gilad’s narration took center stage. And the artwork was perfect for the tone of the story as it captured both the action sequences and somber moments effectively. The team members may have changed over time, and even now in the aftermath of the Armor Hunters event but what hasn’t changed is the fact that it will always consist of those willing to give their all to defend what is right.
