King Conan The Conqueror #6

  • The good

Amazing issue that brings the entire series full circle and leaves an indelible memory that can be both enjoyable and inspirational.

  • The bad

The fact it comes to an end

  • The ugly

  • King Conan The Conqueror #6 is the final issue in the series and has Conan and his army facing off against Xaltotun and his forces one final time as King Conan recounts this saga to his scribe. The memories of war still haunt him as he tells his scribe in the rawest way possible that it’s insatiable but no war was as difficult as the one he fought against Xaltotun. He recalls the march through the kingdom under a unified banner with the soldiers rejuvenated due to the fact that their king was still alive. Now that wasn’t the only reason because they might have been dismayed by the treacherous clouds filled with thunder and lightning summoned by Xaltotun if not for the power of the Heart of Ahriman. They were able to cross the river and this struck fear into Xaltotun’s forces because he promised them floods and storms that would decimate Conan’s army before reaching them. Unknown to them was the fact that Conan’s army possessed the Heart, and as a result they could counter all of Xaltotun’s magic. It appears the only thing Xaltotun has to his advantage is holding Zenobia captive but no one has any idea that she means so much to Conan. So when a traitor approaches them stating he has a way to ambush Conan’s forces they jump at the opportunity. Will the Heart of Ahriman be enough to overcome this plot or will it be enough to give Xaltotun even a slight victory?

Much like King Conan’s triumphant return to Aquilonia, last issue was a triumphant return to the early glory of the start of this series, and this was just to be the climax and enjoyable release. That feeling might seem like a fit for the whore metaphor Conan used to describe war and all it takes but it actually fits what was done with the overall story this issue. There are times when one might be in the mood for some mindless fun and it does the job and there are times when meatier elements are necessary for satisfaction. The beauty of this series, which is highlighted immensely with this issue, is it might appear at first as just simple fun with its forward moving story and entertaining action, and can be enjoyed as such. However the subtext that becomes crystal clear as you flip through the pages and you see Conan and his army overcome various obstacles, and the means in which they do so, gives the story so many layers and you can appreciate even more everything that occurred. Maybe you’ll see, if you haven’t already, when you read the part where Conan and his army are confronted by dark clouds created by Xaltothun and instead of being filled with doubt they use the Heart to overcome any fear. I don’t want to elaborate on specific examples this issue and give any spoilers but considering this series started with King Conan recounting the time when he seemingly lost everything and had to seek out the Heart of Ahriman, I can definitely say this series achieved its goal and conveyed a beautiful message. And Conan’s love for Zenobia based on all she did for him and vice-versa is a stark contrast to the metaphor about war. This series might have only covered a specific period of time in King Conan’s life but it truly encompassed who the man was and who he became, and with the way this was handled, I’m very satisfied.

    SUMMARY

King Conan The Conqueror #6 is a perfect ending to an incredible series about one’s life story, persevering and acquiring what’s needed to triumph and attain what’s truly meaningful in life. It can be viewed as inspirational but it’s definitely entertaining whether or not that was originally intended when this series was conceived. King Conan set out to tell his scribe a story that would encompass his entire life for others to know him, and my hat’s off to Timothy Truman for an excellent adaptation that succeeded in completely doing that. And of course this includes the artwork of Tomas Giorello, which helped make this one of the most engrossing series I’ve read. I highly recommend this series.
