Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3 has Anni acquiring new powers as she seeks to listen to the Earth’s will in order to create balance. The last time Padda and Cuth saw Anni she was being swallowed by the Earth after eating from the tree and then a giant emerged from the ground. Now they can hear her talking to them but can’t see her, and she tells them that the Earth is awakening long-dormant races, such as the giants, to kill humans because they’ve been tilling the soil against the Earth’s wishes and it’s frightened. Humans have been bringing down trees, destroying fields and this is the way it’s responding. However, Padda and Cuth still have to protect themselves and with great teamwork they defeat the one giant attacking them. Suddenly Anni emerges from the tree with never before seen abilities and states that she has made an agreement with the Earth that she will protect it and it has nothing to fear from humans. But how will Anni defend the Earth on her own, and what would ever happen if those protecting her fail?
SUMMARY
Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3 adds wonderfully to the Geomancer’s stature through great character development and Anni’s extensive use of her new powers. Right from the beginning with the giants being unleashed on humans this issue establishes a tone that reaffirms the series tone on not presenting things in a simple black and white manner. This allows for intense action with spectacular artwork and tough decisions made by characters setting up a surprising twist and an interesting conclusion. This issue definitely adds to the legend of Anni.
