Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3

  • The good

Anni's new powers and the complex choices being made. Character development setting up an intriguing conclusion to/ the series.

  • The bad

Earth's response with the giants wasn't clarified compared with other tactics. One of Anni's changes not explained

  • The ugly

  • Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3 has Anni acquiring new powers as she seeks to listen to the Earth’s will in order to create balance. The last time Padda and Cuth saw Anni she was being swallowed by the Earth after eating from the tree and then a giant emerged from the ground. Now they can hear her talking to them but can’t see her, and she tells them that the Earth is awakening long-dormant races, such as the giants, to kill humans because they’ve been tilling the soil against the Earth’s wishes and it’s frightened. Humans have been bringing down trees, destroying fields and this is the way it’s responding. However, Padda and Cuth still have to protect themselves and with great teamwork they defeat the one giant attacking them. Suddenly Anni emerges from the tree with never before seen abilities and states that she has made an agreement with the Earth that she will protect it and it has nothing to fear from humans. But how will Anni defend the Earth on her own, and what would ever happen if those protecting her fail?

Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3
It’s been entertaining to see how the Geomancers got their start and Anni has been an intriguing protagonist. So I was glad that this issue wasted no time providing answers and showing Anni’s transformation into something more than just a shaman. This was done in an impressive fashion in the midst of Padda and Cuth’s fight with the giant, and even the slaughter of other humans at the hands of the giants was shown. Giants did seem pretty random for the Earth’s response and it wasn’t entirely clear why the method used on the giants couldn’t have been used by the Earth if it was fearful. Either way it was pretty cool to see Anni with her new powers and Juan Jose Ryp’s artwork did an incredible job in capturing the awe factor. Not just for Anni’s powers but in various sequences such as the giants towering over humans and the destruction they caused or Padda aiming Cuth at another giant.

Book of Death Legend of the Geomancer #3
The character development progressed enough to move the story forward, and Anni’s change presented an interesting dilemma for Padda and Cuth. Padda was initially the one who saved her based on the correct belief that she wasn’t the one causing all the calamities inflicting the tribe. So I loved the way things weren’t so black and white anymore. Of course no spoilers from me but the gift Anni gave to Cuth compared to how the giants were treated showed the situation perfectly. And it was good to see some things (or people) and I’m hoping will be expounded on next issue. At this rate, I was thoroughly impressed with the potential of not just Anni but all Geomancers.

    SUMMARY

Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #3 adds wonderfully to the Geomancer’s stature through great character development and Anni’s extensive use of her new powers. Right from the beginning with the giants being unleashed on humans this issue establishes a tone that reaffirms the series tone on not presenting things in a simple black and white manner. This allows for intense action with spectacular artwork and tough decisions made by characters setting up a surprising twist and an interesting conclusion. This issue definitely adds to the legend of Anni.
