Thief
Thief is a reboot of the popular franchise featuring the master thief Garrett seeking to make the fortunes of the wealthy his own. As in the other entries in the series this reboot will be set in a fantasy/steampunk world known as the City and has Garrett sporting the Gothic look once again. According to the synopsis given in the latest Game Informer magazine, the City is suffering from turmoil due to social injustices inflicted by the Baron and a plague decimating the lower classes in the City. And to me that sounds like a scenario Garrett would exploit and use to his advantage.
If you’ve never played a Thief game it’s a first person stealth adventure game that basically defined an entire genre. And Garrett was always the anti-hero with his motives being his own personal gain and so the missions were for financial gain and also a personal challenge. From the interviews featured by Game Informer it seems as if Garrett will still retain those characteristics but cast slightly more as a hero and I have no problem with that. It fits with the world the team working on the reboot described and overall sounds dope. Garrett is described as having a complex personality and even though he doesn’t trust others and doesn’t talk much to others he’ll be the narrator of his exploits. And according to the director, Steven Gallagher, he will not only care about the monetary value of the items he takes but also the sentimental value it holds or once held. I’m interested in seeing how that will play out in terms of storyline. As far as Garrett’s new look is concerned I love it because he is after all a master thief.
I played and loved the original thief series. I actually still have the CDs for the first two so it’s definitely an understatement to say I’m looking forward to this. I remember very well sneaking
around a level and being required to use moss arrows to monitor how much noise I made moving around or water arrows to put out the torches or other light sources so I can only imagine what will be added to this game. The reactions and awareness of the enemies were crucial in getting right because they only enhanced all the other game play elements. Thief is one of my must-have titles and I think it’ll capture what made the original so much fun while making the experience new with what will be added in this one.
