X-O Manowar #40

  • The good

Great story build up adding Trill to the mix making the situation more complex. Vine plantings

  • The bad

Soldiers giving Aric a hard time despite a rogue soldier creating the difficult situation. Commander Trill being unquestioned

  • The ugly

  • X-O Manowar #40 has Aric standing alone in preventing all-out war between the Vine and Earth’s forces. No one knows exactly why the pilot opened fire on the Vine’s ship when it only contained refugees seeking to find a new homeworld, and since the pilot is now dead there’s only confusion on both sides. But the deceased pilot isn’t the only one who wouldn’t want a peaceful resolution between the 2 sides but unknown to them the seeds of that mentality was planted long ago, and even Commander Trill, the leader of the Vine invasion months back, wasn’t aware of it when he invaded. He wouldn’t become aware of it until 2 operatives rescued him from certain death after the failed invasion and his defeat at the hands of Aric. They informed Trill that they were Vine plantings left by their ancestors long ago and that he would be safe among them. And even though the current Vine visit to Earth isn’t connected to whatever plan was hatched long ago, the current anger among the Vine, who still have numerous ships in orbit above Earth, about the unprovoked attack could be manipulated and escalate the situation. The Colonel, realizing the severity of the situation, informs everyone in the area that Aric is in control until she arrives at that location. But can one man even with the aid of Shanhara prevent a war from unfolding at this point?

Despite feeling that last issue squandered an opportunity to make the pilot’s actions more meaningful and as a result the overall dilemma more intense, it was still a very enjoyable issue. This issue rectified that almost immediately by first showing the aftermath of the failed Vine invasion with hidden operatives saving Trill, who wants no part of peace with Earth. This raised the stakes drastically and gave the current situation with Aric more gravitas since there was more complicating the Vine settling peacefully on Earth than one pilot’s panic attack. Also, the Colonel remembering that Aric was not only her second-in-command but more capable than fighter pilots to assess the situation was definitely welcomed. And I also enjoyed how the reality of a Vine armada in orbit around Earth wasn’t dismissed and tensions were running high on the Vine’s side. I didn’t understand G.A.T.E.’s soldiers giving Aric a difficult time considering the numerous times he’s protected Earth from invasion as well as the fact that he would be more capable than all of them in combating the Vine. However, it did make for a pretty cool moment, and another intriguing moment that I won’t spoil here.

There wasn’t much action other than that but the story developments were significant, and I found myself engrossed in just about every development. Even the Vine’s wounded being treated was significant because it raised the question among the Visigoths just how much should they protect the Vine. And in a big way made it personal for Aric with Saana being involved. And I enjoyed how Commander Trill was re-introduced to the current situation, although the lack of questioning regarding the fact he failed as leader of the previous invasion seemed too simple. But I feel invested in the current events now, and the cliffhanger at the end of this issue has me anxious for the next one.

    SUMMARY

X-O Manowar #40 is a strong follow-up to last issue, and drastically raises the stakes of the Vine coming to Earth by revealing hidden Vine plantings sent ages ago with their own agenda. And restoring the command back to Aric makes his difficult position clearer as he tries to maintain the peace and deal with the concerns of his people. Commander Trill is a welcome addition making the Vine’s choice in light of recent events possibly more complicated. And now that the stage is set in a more meaningful (and enjoyable) way, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s ahead for all parties involved.
