X-O Manowar #39

  • The good

Addressed psychological aftermath of Armor Hunters invasion. Interesting dynamic with the Vine appearing on Earth

  • The bad

G.A.T.E. sending regular fighter jets as first contact with alien vessel despite everyone at their disposal.

  • The ugly

  • X-O Manowar #39 has the Vine arriving on Earth seeking to establish a new homeworld while contending with Earth’s military. Since Dead Hand destroyed the planet of Loam, the Vine have been searching for a new home, and the Priest hasn’t forgotten how much Aric helped them during the attack. So when Shanhara wakes Aric in the middle of the night, and the Visigoths all rally with weapons to defend against a Vine ship that suddenly appeared in their midst, there’s an initial concern about how to greet them. When the Priest emerges from the ship he tells Aric that they’ve travelled to Earth to make a new life for their people the same way Aric did for his. Aric understands this, however, the last visit from extraterrestrials was by the Armor Hunters, and the Earth still hasn’t fully recovered from the destruction they caused 6 months ago. The harm was multifaceted, such as what has been occurring with Captain Franklin Trolley, a hero during the battle of Los Angeles. He received numerous accolades and everyone views him as a hero but privately he suffers from PTSD despite still being on active duty. Will the Vine’s sudden appearance spark another war due to misunderstandings or will Aric being able to prevent that knowing the Vine come in peace?

The Dead Hand story arc was not only entertaining but resulted in lasting change with the Vine’s homeworld permanently destroyed along with much of its population. So I was looking forward to seeing what was next for them considering their history and prior treatment of other races throughout the universe. I enjoyed how the Armor Hunters invasion was tied into the view of the Vine’s sudden appearance on Earth, and the way Captain Trolley’s situation was treated seriously. This was a great setup to this story arc and showed the complexity to the Vine attempting to settle on Earth in a solid way. I have to admit I was slightly disappointed in the way things unfolded next but not the overall outcome necessarily. It was understandable that G.A.T.E. would want to scramble fighter jets to the area even ignoring the fact the ship’s arrival was in Aric’s area but the amateurish way in which control over the entire situation was basically conceded to a fighter pilot felt forced. To not even communicate with Aric at least enough to identify the ship and understand the situation on even a basic level for an a matter this important was reckless to say the least, and more should have been expected from the Colonel, who has proven herself on numerous occasions. Maybe if this act was tied into an understanding of the Vine’s connection with the armors it would have come off a little better. With that said, this issue was successful in garnering sympathy for the Vine in light of their previous actions. And that set the stage well in jump starting the Exodus story arc, and this issue has me seriously intrigued about what could happen next with the Vine on Earth. There’s so much potential in this story arc including the possibility of them settling on another planet.

    SUMMARY

X-O Manowar #39 is an enjoyable start to the story arc and successfully sets the stage to address the Vine’s current situation in a multi-faceted and entertaining way. Their sudden arrival on Earth creates a myriad of problems, and the actions of a jet fighter pilot only highlights one aspect of it. I do wish the Vine’s connection to the armors, and as a result the Armor Hunters, was addressed at least a little but that can still happen down the line. For now, I’m interested in seeing where things go from here.

Read “XO Manowar: Valiant 25th Anniversary Special #1” it explains the Vine’s connection to the armor.

Yeah, that was a great issue. That’s why I wish the pilot’s actions were based on him knowing about that connection to an extent and not just anxiety
