Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #3 continues with Gilad battling Humongous to make it through the Iron Doors. It opens up with the time Gilad was captured and being tortured by Humongous beyond the veil of life. Humongous tells Gilad that he’s the aberration since he keeps returning to life and that the natural order of the demon realm is disrupted as a result. So he explains to Gilad that he can’t keep letting him keep returning to the land of the living because the demons whisper that Gilad defies Humongous and it weakens his control. So the plan is to put Gilad on display for the entire horde so they can see what happens to those who defy Humongous. However, Gilad has a different plan and is determined to break free even if it’s due to a rat chewing on his hand to free him from the shackles. He eventually passes out from the pain being too much for him to bear and he dreams of a conversation he had with his wife, Lena. She reminds him of why he never gives up and why it’s important for him to never give up. But will it be enough for him to keep going this time?
The flashback at the start showed how intense it gets for Gilad in his struggle to return and that was good. It made the first Geomancer selecting him as the eternal protector that much clearer. And using the rat to aid him in getting free was ingenious. Yet when he passed out and things switched to him getting ready to leave his family it made me have a flashback about last issue. And then this issue started feeling redundant.
SUMMARY
Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #3 is a slightly disappointing issue due to the fact it doesn’t address the more intriguing aspects of the current story arc and mostly focuses on Gilad cutting through more generic demons. Yes it’s made clearer how strenuous it is for him to come back to life but it becomes redundant because there is no new significant character development. I can thoroughly enjoy action, however, Gilad is a more fascinating character when he’s treated as more than just a simple axe. So hopefully next issue can reflect that sentiment.
