Veil #5

  • The good

Great action and beautiful artwork. Story intriguing enough to want it to be revisited in a future series.

  • The bad

What made Veil so unique wasn't explored further. Opportunity was squandered during series to make Veil and Dante's relationship more compelling

  • The ugly

  • Veil #5 is the conclusion to the series and has Veil struggling with the truth of her nature and those who want to manipulate her. It opens up with the entity that was possessing the rat talking to Dante taking over the body of Dante’s friend in order to pursue Dante. And that’s because this entity knows that Dante is going to Veil’s location in order to free her from Cormac’s clutches. It’s not an easy task considering Veil has to do his bidding but she’s doing her best to resist his control. And since Cormac gets pleasure from Veil inflicting suffering and pain on those he targets, this twisted use of her powers is reflected in her outer appearance. And he has big plans for her that all involve his domination of any who would oppose him, and this is due to him being in control of the chain connected to her true nature. With Veil’s powers at Cormac’s disposal, no one can seek to oppose him or will Veil remember her friend Dante and defeat Cormac for good?

I’ve been enjoying this series immensely and was looking forward to this issue. Despite the lack of back story for Dante that could make the devotion to Veil even more compelling I did enjoy Dante and Veil’s relationship, and with her true form being revealed I was very curious about how things would unfold. And I was impressed with Cormac’s villainy because he was almost as terrifying as Veil’s true form. And this issue opened up in the same way as the previous ones with beautifully drawn panels setting the tone for the issue with glimpses of important pieces of the entire situation. Of course Cormac would also want from Veil exactly what every man has wanted from her this entire series before Dante would show up attempting to rescue her. Since Veil was actually a Succubus, the events of the past issues started to make sense, and even though I enjoyed the struggle between her and Cormac over her actions, there wasn’t much revealed as to why Veil was so different and resistant to that nature. So again, I feel an opportunity was squandered to establish a stronger connection between Veil and Dante to make that situation more impactful. That doesn’t mean the series of events weren’t entertaining because they were, and the artwork only made everything better. I’m not entirely clear on the necessity of the role of the one possessing the rat, and I’m avoiding identifying him due to spoilers. Overall, the conclusion of this series/story arc was enjoyable and revisiting this world in a future series is a trip I think I’d enjoy.

    SUMMARY

Veil #5 is an enjoyable conclusion to the series and is filled with enough action and beautiful artwork to be entertaining from beginning to end. Veil’s internal struggle due to those wanting to have control over her powers was compelling, and made her unique considering her true nature. However I do wish that this was explored more so the reason(s) behind her being so different, as well as Dante’s devotion, would have made the overall story more engrossing. And so I hope this world and story is revisited because it’s definitely worth another look.
