Veil #3

  • The good

Fluid storytelling and gorgeous artwork makes this the best issue in the series as it builds on the best of the previous issues

  • The bad

Lack of answers regarding Veil's origins and the specific reasons for summoning her

  • The ugly

  • Veil #3 continues the story of Veil after she ran off from Dante angry but also confused since she doesn’t know who to trust, what to do or who she is. There is one, Cormac, who not only knows who she is but why she was summoned into the world and how he intends on utilizing her. Using witchcraft he’s able to locate her and sends a rat to go retrieve her and bring her to him. But those who paid millions of dollars to Cormac to summon her are now aware that he lied to them about the process not working and that he intends on using Veil for his own purposes. They’ve been watching him from a distance and Cormac knows this and is fully prepared to defend himself. But the group has hired ex-special forces to keep an eye on Cormac and are prepared to strike when given the command. All these machinations are being put in place and Veil is just out there unaware of this and most likely at this point not caring. Who is Veil really and what do these competing sides want with her?

For the most part this series has been very enjoyable from the artwork with its memorizing style to the way panels have been laid out to the way the story has unfolded. I’ve enjoyed the character interaction between Veil and Dante earlier but the problem I’ve had with this series has been the repetitive attempted sexual assaults on Veil as a means to develop her character or rather create a new situation for her. This issue avoids that entirely and also it continues its trend of very interesting starts as Cormac becomes more intriguing with each issue. That’s also the case with the group that originally hired Cormac to summon Veil into the world and in turn the mystery deepens as to her identity and how they were all aware of her prior to this. And yes Greg Rucka does an excellent job with the story this issue as it definitely becomes more gripping and has the right pacing and action but it’s perfectly complemented by Toni Fejzula’s artwork because the story is still beautifully told even in the panels without words. And in the midst of this it becomes clear that there is also a side to Veil that is protective of her better nature and that struggle couldn’t have been portrayed any better as the great artwork can leave you in a trance and fully engrossed in the story. And with the way this issue ends, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one and see how things unfold.

    SUMMARY

Veil #3 is an excellent issue that moves the series forward with fluid storytelling and captivating artwork while making the true identity of Veil even more intriguing with its revelations. There aren’t any answers given regarding the intentions of the Cormac or the group that initially hired him other than it being for some sinister reasons. However I suspect we will be getting those answers soon enough and I’ll be looking forward to them.
