Unity #20

  • The good

Entertaining flash back stories regarding Warmonger's encounters with previous Unity teams

  • The bad

Focuses very little on the current situation and plans. Artwork change for present had a slightly jarring effect.

  • The ugly

  • Unity #20 continues with Warmonger attempting to destroy Unity before they can stop her latest efforts to start World War III. Similar to her treatment of Ninjak, Warmonger chooses to explain to Livewire why she’s attacking them, and she does this by relating a story from 1800 in London. She’s had experiences with previous Unity teams but this one group only served the same function as a Unity team since it was before there was an official sanction. However this group got the better of her because they staged a ruse to convince her they wanted her to join their team as a secret weapon despite her being their prisoner at the time. And they also convinced her that a gateway they had open could be instrumental in her causing chaos throughout the world only to learn that it was actually to transport her to a faraway place to fight for her survival. Somehow she was able to make it back and the current Unity team is her target. Could Warmonger truly be responsible for these different wars throughout history or is she just delusional about her capabilities to start one and take out Unity?

Last issue Warmonger completely won me over as a convincing villain, and the way the story unfolded with her kicking Ninjak through the wall at the end was pretty cool. This issue started off with the same narrative format and aside from the story being interesting I wasn’t initially so sure about the format being the exact same. I was impressed with the members of the team holding Warmonger captive, and the plan they orchestrated was clever and entertaining. And this even made me more interested in the creation of the Unity teams. But I was glad when I saw that Warmonger was already fighting Livewire in the present and not just another sneak attack similar to Ninjak. But the artwork also changed, and unfortunately not for the better. Different artists were used for all of Warmonger’s stories than were used for the present day, which consisted of her fight with Livewire. If the artists were reversed then maybe it would’ve been more appealing to me because the action in the present day would’ve been more enjoyable (and detailed). But the effect it had, taking into consideration very little story progression in the present, was that instead of making Warmonger come off as a menacing villain she came off more as just an elaborate story-teller. That doesn’t mean the stories weren’t entertaining because they were, I just would’ve liked to see how everything ties into the present and what she intends to do. Just like last issue the ending was pretty good so I hope next issue picks up from that point and continues to look forward.

    SUMMARY

Unity #20 is a solid issue that slightly suffers by focusing more on Warmonger’s previous battles with former Unity teams as opposed to the current situation and her plans. The previous battles are entertaining, and the artwork is wonderful but after a while it feels like Warmonger’s stature as a villain is just being diminished. However, the flashback stories are entertaining and hopefully next issue the focus will be more on the current situation and threat.
