Unity #18 has the team attempting to subdue an escaped and angry Malgam before he can wreak havoc with his armor. It opens up with Major Charlie Palmer briefing the team about Malgam and how he’s been cooperative until recently when he easily cut through the walls in his cell and a quarter-mile of bedrock and walked right out. The Major tells the team that the plan isn’t to attack Malgam but to approach him gently because they want him back in the fold on their side, and the escape was just to blow off steam and get some fresh air. So Unity heads there with this intention but Livewire wants GIN-GR to stay on the periphery at first so Malgam isn’t overwhelmed. However, since Malgam was infected with the armor virus and half of his body replaced with it, it’s been difficult to determine what has happened to him, and he doesn’t want to go back to be treated like a guinea pig. So will Unity be able to give Malgam what he wants or is a battle inevitable even with Major Palmer’s help?
So what this issue was lacking in character development it made up for somewhat with action as each member of Unity would take a quick shot at Malgam in order to calm him down. However, I did feel the ending to this issue was just rehashing what was shown in each of the individual stories including some of the same images. And as a result some of the momentum gained in this issue was lost, and maybe the next story arc will explore those developments further. And considering the preview shown for the next story arc I’m not entirely sure how much of it will be explored in the next story arc but I am looking forward to seeing when it does.
SUMMARY
Unity #18 is a decent issue that does a good job in showing what became of Malgam and has some entertaining action. However, some of the sequences towards the end of the issue rehash what was explored in the previous 3 issues about the members current mental and physical state. So despite the lack of character development it was still a relatively enjoyable read. I’m not sure what the next story arc will entail but hopefully things will move forward for the team as a whole.
