Unity #13

  • The good

Introduction to new and interesting enemies. Plots set in motion are pretty thrilling. Artwork

  • The bad

Faith's portrayal was somewhat perplexing considering she's been involved in worse. Infiltration at end seemed pretty simple

  • The ugly

  • Unity #13 has the team go on its first mission since acquiring Faith as the new team member. The mission is about locating specific terrorists who have incredible powers by going after the one man connected to all of them. One’s codename is Gang, and she’s an incredibly powerful psiot who has psychological problems based on absorbing the psyches of victims of horrible psiot activation experiments. Another is Stock, a man with unrivaled hacking skills due to his superhuman computational abilities and has caused economic meltdowns in the past, among other things. Ultimo has biological and chemical-based abilities yet the true extent is unknown. And when Myth, a man accustomed to using biological weapons that can be replicated, and the man without a face to the mix, then the danger increases tremendously. It’s already known that they’ve been recruited for a mission on U.S. soil but it’s not known to them that their true target is G.A.T.E. headquarters. The only lead they have is the man they’ve all been in contact with. So this is a very serious mission but Faith appears to be struggling to focus on all the details being given in the briefing due to her being in awe of the entire situation and the other members of the team. Will she only be a hindrance at this point or is it irrelevant due to the fact that this team of superpowered terrorists is already ten steps ahead of Unity?

After reading Harbinger: Faith #0 and seeing what went into Faith being selected as the latest team member, I was looking forward to this issue and seeing the dynamics of the team. And considering the villains partially introduced in the last issue, and the reason for their team being constructed, I was pretty excited for this issue. And I loved the start with the way the villains were being introduced because it raised my interest in them tremendously because they seemed like a formidable group with various skills and powers. And every time I thought one was pretty dope, the next one was introduced and only made the overall story that much more entertaining. This was done as part of the briefing from Neville, the head of MI-6. The narration of the story would switch midway through this issue to Faith, who would offer commentary on everything ranging from her observations of her new teammates to her view on their mission. Initially this was good because it gave a different perspective of the team and a sense of being there at this time. Even when the mission would start it was the same. But since I was only introduced to Faith in the Armor Hunters event I was a little perplexed about her portrayal out in the field. I could understand being initially nervous since it’s her first one with the team but not her first time in the field. And considering all the terrors the Renegades faced and her experience in the Harbinger Foundation I was surprised she was treated so green even in the aftermath of the mission and how she viewed things. Again, it gave a different perspective but I hope going forward it can contribute to more intensive missions.

However, the super-powered terrorists would make their move and reveal their goal shown last issue about the world being unaware that GIN-GR was still alive and fully operational. There would be some action as their scheme would be set in motion. And even though I felt like I missed something, the ending was pretty intense, and I can’t wait for the real battle to begin.

    SUMMARY

Unity #13 effectively raises the stakes and stature of Unity’s enemies by detailing their capabilities and intent, making the current situation more entertaining. Faith’s first mission with the team wasn’t surprising except her green portrayal and view of events considering all she went through as part of the Renegades, and even recently during the Armor Hunters event. Overall I still like the dynamic and the way events unfolded this issue makes the entire story arc more intriguing. I don’t know what the fallout would be with GIN-GR still being operational but so far it has the potential to be extremely thrilling.
