Unity #11

  • The good

Connecting Ninjak's past actions to his current solution in combating the alien drones. Some developments are intriguing for future issues

  • The bad

Alien drones aren't as compelling as the Armor Hunters or the alien swarm in Harbinger. Still felt like just biding time

  • The ugly

  • Unity #11 has the team confronting a new threat during the Armor Hunters crossover event. It opens up with Livewire attempting to contact Ninjak and Gilad about the drones that have been spawning from GIN-GR since it crashed in the middle of Los Angeles. She’s trying to communicate with all the alien drones but there are just too many of them, and the chatter between them is too loud for her to control all of them. Even Colonel Capshaw tries to get through to Ninjak and Gilad but to no avail. Ultimately they’re able to get through and let them know that the drones are using technology in the area to replicate themselves and it’s necessary to get the drones out of the area.  This is a threat unlike any other but fortunately Ninjak has had training in just about all pertinent fields, and can use abilities to come up with solutions in a split second. This is due to his experience, and within this split second he’s able to recount his past on numerous occasions, and all of which prepared him for this moment. Whether it was his time in San Francisco where he had cutting-edge tech designed for him or when he was climbing the Himalayas in order to retrieve a unique substance from a cactus, it all plays a role in his current solution. But with the alien drones spawning or regenerating faster than they’re destroyed, as well as Livewire being unable to control them, will Ninjak’s plan even stand a chance in the face of this invasion?

In every major crossover event there’s at least one series that suffers due to the nature of the beast, so-to-speak, and in this case it’s Unity. It’s not that it’s been a bad series during the event because it hasn’t, it’s just what they deal with has been so far on the periphery that it’s not as memorable in the big scheme of things. For example, Livewire’s takedown of GIN-GR was an incredible moment and in this series since then everything has remained the same. And I’ve found the characters to be very interesting, Livewire in particular, and I get the feeling that their abilities and personalities would shine through more in their usual storylines. But it says a lot that even though my introduction to these characters has been during this event that I’m still intrigued by them and want to know and see more of them. Maybe I wasn’t the only one with this sentiment as this issue would focus on Ninjak and show instances from his past where he would have some uniquely constructed item whose purpose only he knew but it was powerful. This made the character a lot more interesting to me although the initial connection to the current event was relatively simple. It would serve as the basis for his plan and the way it was executed was entertaining. Gilad wouldn’t have a major role here and such was acknowledged. However it became part of the story in terms of the teamwork that will be necessary going forward. The action was intense at a particular point, and the artwork was as good as it’s been throughout this event in this series. So I can definitively say that I can’t wait to see the next story arcs in this series because I think I’ll really enjoy them with the way this team has been constructed and the various characters. In terms of the connection to the Armor Hunter event, it still didn’t resonate in a way that felt meaningful to the invasion. Yes they had to fight drones but that aspect of the story wasn’t nearly as effective as the alien swarm in the Harbinger series. And Gilad was close to useless in dealing with them. The good thing is it was better than fighting another hound.

    SUMMARY

Unity #11 is a decent issue that is most notable for its highlight of events in Ninjak’s past and connecting that to an entertaining solution to the current predicament. As one who is relatively new to the series and character, I could appreciate that. However Gilad was ineffective this issue and the alien drones didn’t feel compelling in terms of the overall situation in the Armor Hunters crossover. As far as feeling intrigued about the characters and future story arcs, I’m completely on board and I look forward to the next issues.
