Tomb Raider #13

  • The good

Artwork is better. Opening sequence gives hope Lara will be back in her element soon. Sequence with Lara and her uncle. The Watchers seem to have more potential than Trinity

  • The bad

Another shady organization threatening Lara and her friends.

  • The ugly

  • Tomb Raider #13 is the start of the new story arc and has Lara combating a dangerous international group known as the Watchers. It opens up with Lara racing through the British Museum after hours as part of her exercise routine. She finds it best to run across the banisters or flip on and over artifacts when the museum is closed and she doesn’t have to worry about museum visitors. Well, that and the fact that security doesn’t mind her doing it either considering she knows how valuable the items are since she works there. But it’s not security that’s watching her activities from the shadows this night, and Lara has a sense of something being wrong. But it’s not just her they’re watching as Jonah in his new job as a chef is in their sights as well. He has it rough on the job but considering the intentions of the one watching him from the shadows things are about to get rougher. Even Sam, who is doing nothing but picking up baked goods after a day of work, is being followed by another mysterious figure through the streets of London. What does this mysterious group want with Lara and her friends, and when do they plan on making their move? Or should this mysterious group fear Lara and her friends?

I expressed in my last review how I felt the story arc was mostly filler with no answers regarding Trinity or what Kaz may have accessed from them. Apparently this was so there would be a hacker on the team, as Kaz now fills that role. So I was really looking forward to a new story arc, and this issue started off great with Lara running and flipping through the British Museum among the artifacts. I was excited and reminded of one of the many things that made Tomb Raider fun with the thrill of adventure. I was even somewhat intrigued by the mysterious figure watching and threatening from the shadows. When it was shown that the same type of mysterious figure was watching Lara’s friends I only felt slightly intrigued because it felt generic after Sam fought one of them. And it’s not that I have a problem with Lara’s friends but at times I prefer more Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, instead of the Adventures of Lara Croft and Friends. And the last story arc had a shady organization that wasn’t engrossing and now there’s another shady organization targeting them. Will this one be more than just a faceless boogeyman? At least this one, the Watchers, was identified as a group operating out of the Lacandon Jungle with the Serpent Queen as their leader and that was an interesting introduction. I won’t reveal their demands here but there is potential in what they would reveal.

There wasn’t just potential in this issue as it had some action at various points, real or imagined, and it was humorous during a specific situation that had Lara donning a pantsuit. I don’t know what will unfold next issue with the announcement at the end of this one but it seems as if we’ll get to see Lara more in her element and less pantsuits or stage gowns for a play. And that’s a good thing.

    SUMMARY

Tomb Raider #13 was a decent start to the new story arc and it seems as if the Watchers will be a much more entertaining group than Trinity. I’m not entirely sold on another shady organization threatening Lara and her friends in some manner, and not just in terms of feeling redundant but another underdeveloped boogeyman as well. Lara in action at the start of this issue gave me hope that she’ll get back to her roots as an adventurer. And considering the ultimatum the Watchers gave them, and the decision made at the end of this issue, I have hope that we’ll see more of that during this story arc.
