Tomb Raider #12

  • The good

Action sequence was somewhat entertaining including Auger Ramille entering the scene. Story arc concludes

  • The bad

Feels like a filler issue with conclusion of events not shedding light on Trinity or meaningful development

  • The ugly

  • Tomb Raider #12 has Lara facing off with Mr. Cruz once again in his hunt for Kaz. It opens open with him driving through London after realizing Auger Ramile turned on Trinity. Even though he’s not fully healed and still needs an oxygen mask just to breathe, he’s determined to finish what he started. And the only thing he hates more than being in London, a city that he believes is just a reminder of the hubris and carnality of man, is Lara. However, he fears Lara because she’s the one who defeated him and his soldiers and put him in the hospital. This is what he tells his 2 subordinates who have complete faith in Trinity just like Mr. Cruz, and they see Auger Ramile’s departure as their way to move up in the organization. What he doesn’t know is that Lara is currently afraid of being the lead in Jonah’s play, and that she’s in this situation because she scared off the former lead. She’s against doing it until Sam gives her a pep talk about how Lara is able to understand archaeology better than others and why. Infused with this new confidence, Lara decides to go ahead with her role in the play until she receives a note stating Kaz has been kidnapped by Mr. Cruz. Can Lara finish off her enemy once and for all or will the Trinity organization be too much for even Lara to dismantle?

Last issue was an unusual one to me as Mr. Cruz’s survival an ability to walk out of the hospital in such a fashion was perplexing. So Lara being the lead in a play didn’t even come close to that in terms of being bizarre. Auger Ramille was an interesting character based on the potential of where the storyline could go with him. But it didn’t help the view of Trinity, and this issue just added on to the view of it as an incompetent organization at best. At worst, it would just be an imaginary organization made up by Mr. Cruz. And I say that because the hierarchy explained by him was perplexing. All that aside, this issue would pretty much be a rehashing of the situation in the previous issues with Mr. Cruz kidnapping Kaz and standing off with Lara. So they still wouldn’t know what Kaz stole, if anything, nor would any light be shed on that. It wasn’t even shown how she was kidnapped. There would be some good action involving Lara but Auger would enter into the mix for his own reasons. His role at first would be interesting and I dont’ want to spoil what he said about Lara but it would be the most entertaining aspect of this issue. However, the series of events would ultimately make me feel like this issue was pretty much a filler issue. And I’m still not feeling the artwork. So instead of it helping me feel engrossed in the series of events, or at least the action, it made everything feel flat and too simplistic in terms of the gravity of what was taking place. And the fighting just didn’t feel overwhelmingly exciting. So I’m glad this story arc has concluded and I’m looking forward to more interesting adventures with Lara.

    SUMMARY

Tom Raider #12 had some interesting moments as the conclusion of the story arc but overall felt like a filler issue. Trinity started as an intriguing organization but the combination of Mr. Cruz’s incompetence as well as the fact that no one still knows for sure whether Kaz took something made it feel almost comical. Thankfully the story arc is over, and I believe there will be better adventures ahead for Lara.
