Tomb Raider #10

  • The good

Action is pretty fun as Lara has to improvise with help. Story does progress

  • The bad

Trinity still remains a mystery other than hints about their operatives beliefs. Kaz's involvement remains unclear. Character(s) suffer tremendous injuries making it feel meaningless

  • The ugly

  • Tomb Raider #10 continues with Trinity using an assault helicopter to fire on Lara’s location to take her out once and for all. This brazen attack was unexpected and there was no way the house could survive the missiles as it’s practically decimated. Lara and Varvara survive the initial attack but Varvara’s sons aren’t as fortunate. And there’s no time to mourn as a squad is sent in to check for the dead and eliminate any survivors. But Lara and Varvara won’t go out so easily as they’re able to stand their ground for a brief moment and even take out some of the search squad. However, Mr. Cruz tells them to pull back so he can launch another attack from the assault chopper. There’s no way Lara and Varvara can withstand another missile attack in the house so they’re able to escape down a hatch right before Mr. Cruz can fire. Even if this makeshift bunker can withstand these assaults there’s no way for Lara and Varvara to completely escape or wait it out. Is Lara finally in over her head or does she have one more plan up her sleeve?

I was surprised at the ending of last issue with the missiles being shot at the house but it wasn’t so much about a cliffhanger wondering if Lara would survive. It was seeing how far Trinity would go to eliminate Kaz with such a blatant attack. It made the entire story and all that Kaz must’ve discovered that much more intriguing. So aside from Kaz’s brief words about being involved with the shady organization, not much was revealed about the details of her involvement and why she would be so important to Trinity to be tracked all over. This issue would focus solely on the action with Lara so it wouldn’t clarify what made Kaz so coveted or even shed light on Trinity as an organization. It would shed more light on Lara’s character development as she would make use of her surroundings and things she learned growing up to fight back against this squad. And it was enjoyable seeing this due to the decent artwork. I would’ve liked to see more detail in some of the panels but it was still clear enough to follow the action and not be taken out of the moment. I felt that last issue took a departure from earlier issues in terms of Lara and Mr. Cruz suffering the number of injuries they did but since it was for both characters it didn’t bother me that much. This issue pushes that a little too much in one case and I’m being vague so I don’t give away any spoilers. Unless there’s an explanation beyond what has been apparent to justify this exaggeration then it just takes away from what occurred this issue and the tone of the series. So while it was a really fun issue I felt it left some things hanging regarding answers that could’ve made the story more engrossing. But considering the change for the characters going forward maybe these answers will still come.

    SUMMARY

Tomb Raider #10 is a fun issue that has some pretty intense action throughout as Lara fights back against Trinity. I don’t mind the action allowing characters to sustain more injuries than usual but it’s a fine line with the tone of this series, and I don’t want it to be exaggerated to the point where what happens to characters become meaningless. Lara doesn’t receive more answers about Trinity or their operations, and as a result nothing new was added to their overall story or Kaz’s involvement with them. There was story progression so I’m interested in seeing how things develop with the characters’ situations changing and the possibilities in future storylines.
