The Witcher: Fox Children #4

  • The good

Enjoyable action. Satisfying conclusion and story progression.

  • The bad

More time spent with the ship lost at sea in an illusion. Some panels lacked facial details

  • The ugly

  • The Witcher: Fox Children #4 continues with Geralt attempting to lead the crew out of the Vulpess’s illusion before it’s too late. After getting a glimpse of her in her fox form, the crew is terrified of what she could do to them next. Geralt states that the Vulpess was just toying with them because if she weren’t then they would all already be dead. But now he feels that her patience has run thin and she intends to kill them now. This causes the crew to be divided between those who want to throw the dead fox child overboard and those who think it’s a horrible idea. The former want to include Master Parlaghy with the dead child since he was the one who killed her because they believe it would satisfy the Vulpess’s thirst for revenge. The rest won’t allow that, and even Geralt doesn’t think it’ll be a good idea to do so. The more immediate concern is to get the ship out of the endless loop it’s been in for some time. He orders the captain to sail for a geyser despite the captain’s belief that doing so would just result in the ship ending up as a wreck. However, when they do they’re finally able to get out of that trap safely. This has only been a taste of the Vulpess’s power so what can Geralt and the crew possibly do to be free of the Vulpess’s grasp?

When this series first started and Geralt discussed the extent of a Vulpess’s power my mind was racing thinking of all the exciting possibilities that could occur. I wasn’t surprised about the methodical pacing of the first few issues, and I wondered what possible twists were in the works considering the power of illusion a Vulpess wouldn’t hesitate to use. The start of this issue with the crew debating what to do next including throwing Parlaghy overboard was an interesting moment because it brought to the forefront the most pertinent fact, and that was none of them could bring back the dead fox child so what could they do other than defeat the Vulpess. I did feel a little seasick after that in terms of the story being stuck on the ship but it would only last a moment as Paul Tobin would start to pick up the pace after the Vulpess would call various creatures to her aid to attack the ship. The action was decent at first, and started to get better as it went along, and mainly when Geralt would use more of his abilities to help protect the crew and defend the ship. The artwork was stellar in some panels but there were more than a few where the details were almost nonexistent and characters wouldn’t even have faces. But overall it was decent.
As far as story progression, this issue would take it’s time initially but about midway through it would pick up leading to an ultimately satisfying conclusion that should make even the beginning of the next, and last, issue exciting. And so I hope the overall conclusion is just as satisfying.

    SUMMARY

The Witcher: Fox Children #4 is an intense episode that, albeit slowly, brings the confrontation between the Vulpess and Geralt to a head setting up an interesting finale. The crew arguing about what to do next with some taking drastic action elevated the fear of the Vulpess’s powers to a new and much-needed level. And the action this time around is much better with Geralt’s witcher abilities on full display. And the ending has me intrigued about the nature of the Vulpess and how this entire situation will be resolved. Hopefully it’ll be a solid finale.
