The Strain: Mister Quinlan, Vampire Hunter #2

  • The good

    Unexpected emotional tug, arena action.

  • The bad

    A tad predictable.

  • The ugly

Worms in the eye are never pleasant.

  • I must say. It’s an interesting dynamic, watching the show then reading the comic that runs before it. There is only so much the show can do on a limited budget so it is quite a change of pace seeing so much blood in the first two issues. Good stuff. Now, let’s see how Mister Quinlan fared in the arena in The Strain: Mister Quinlan #2.

As expected, Quinlan had no problems dispatching his opponents in a manner that would make Maximus proud. He spent three years there, but he learned more than combat techniques. Here, Quinlan morphed from boy to man, growing up and learning the importance of honor. Every arena has its champion, and this one has Spiculus. He exemplifies everything one expects from a warrior and Quinlan looks up to him as the type of man he wants to be.

The Strain: Mister Quinlan, Vampire Hunter #2
There are tons going on in this issues 24 pages, and we see more of what turned Quinlan into the half-man half-strigoi he is today. His sense of honor and combat are carved from his many years of survival, but it all was forged during his days as a gladiator. Plenty of quality moments litter this issue from the consequences of the battle with Spiculus to the big reveal at the end.

    SUMMARY

The Strain: Mister Quinlan #2 is all around an excellent issue, the story of Mister Quinlan continues to evolve more and more. Origin stories can be a tricky thing, as they’re always the potential to mess up a good thing. This is off to a fantastic start, and I can’t recommend enough.
