Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy #3

  • The good

Action sequence is enjoyable in a vacuum. Some of Greene's history is revealed

  • The bad

Zero story progression until the very last panel. Elise Fong's character is still underdeveloped and I'm still unconvinced about her threat to Skynet

  • The ugly

  • Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy #3 opens up with former agent Greene regrouping after encountering once again the terminator sent back to kill Elise Fong, who has fallen into the hands of private mercenaries. She does this by gaining access to a stranger’s house and knocking her out with drugs and uses the opportunity to change her appearance. She also recalls her time with the CIA and what went wrong that led to her ouster. It wasn’t that she wasn’t capable but that they could no longer trust her to follow orders and apparently agent(s) were killed as a result. However she’s still intent on re-acquiring Elise, who tries to explain to her interrogator that she doesn’t know why she’s being targeted. And the fact that this mercenary group is threatening her family if she doesn’t provide it with answers only enrages her as she attacks the interrogator before being easily subdued. The terminator also takes time to regroup and repair himself but instead of going after Elise he’s now targeting Greene. But with Elise seemingly out of both of their reach will they have to settle for just attacking each other?

I’ve been feeling that this series hasn’t come close to reaching the full potential of its premise but that it’s been an enjoyable read with some pretty spectacular action sequences. And last issue revealed a little information regarding Elise being such a dangerous target to Skynet to the extent where they would send back a terminator to kill her. And with the development at the end of the issue that raised the stakes drastically I was optimistic about this issue and where the story would go. And it started off very promising with a little of Greene’s history in terms of the CIA being revealed and Elise’s interrogation hinting at possible details being given about her being targeted. But then halfway through this issue Greene and the terminator see each other and the rest of the issue deteriorates as it becomes just another long fight between the two of them. And I’m one who thoroughly enjoys action but every issue has felt the same with just a tease of a story and then a battle between Greene and the terminator, and stamina issues aside, it’s tough to see Greene catch the terminator with the same moves in every battle. The fight was entertaining and drawn very well by Jamal Igle, who does an excellent job in creating detailed fighting sequences that feel pretty engrossing. The problem is it feels like filler since there are no details about Elise Fong, who hasn’t been developed since the series has started, or her family since they’ve been mentioned numerous times. No further light is shed on the agency holding her, and to put it simply, I’m just not convinced it was necessary to send a terminator back in time to target her if it’s just about artificial skin with a kill switch. Why not send a terminator back to just have them not use the artificial skin? I’m being slightly facetious but I’m still waiting for the story to develop so I could have something to feel invested in knowing what’s at stake. For now, I’m just as unsure of what’s going on as those who encounter the terminator for the first time.

    SUMMARY

Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy #3 is a mildly enjoyable issue due to its action but the lack of a story or any progress being made regarding the last issue’s developments lowers my expectations for the rest of this series. I’m not convinced that protecting or killing Elise Fong is vital for either side since she’s had almost zero character development nor has her invention been confirmed as the reason since it’s just been described as skin grafting and this issue completely ignores that. I don’t know what will unfold next issue but it seems ripe for another drawn out battle with very little in the way of answers so hopefully that’s not the case.
