  • The bad

Overall plan still hasn't been revealed to justify all facing similar situation in each issue

  • The ugly

  • Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 picks up with the imperial stormtrooper arriving on the planet where his rebel contact is waiting for him after Princess Leia gave herself up so he could escape. They immediately come under fire and are shot down but he survives the crash landing. The stormtrooper with the coded DNA performed better than the others in many ways but one thing the Empire couldn’t have expected was a stormtrooper who hated it and would switch sides as a result. But the one who shot them down doesn’t get away as he’s taken down along with other troops in the area by Chewbacca, who is revealed to be their rebel contact. The stormtrooper is unsure of how to feel about this as he views Chewbacca as just an animal and the Empire keeps its drives, which they have to access, very well protected. He also makes note of the smell, which is distracting, but since he’s already made his choice to help the rebels there’s no going back and he has to trust them. It doesn’t help that he once fought against the Wookies and lost a lot of friends in the process but he puts that aside as they search for one who knows where the drives they’re searching for are located. Should the stormtrooper be concerned with Chewbacca’s ability to succeed with this sensitive task or will his prejudice get in the way of them being successful?

I won’t even say that this series has been a guilty pleasure because it’s been very good for many reasons but I will admit that at times I almost feel like a fanboy reading it. However it’s safe to say that anyone showing an interest in this series wants to have that feeling of enjoyment throughout, and then satisfaction at the end. And the execution in this series has been so well that I wasn’t even concerned when it was shown at the end of last issue that Chewbacca would be the rebel contact this time despite his communication issues. But the writing was great and even addressed that with a humorous line (“I still believe people just pretend it has meaning”). The stormtrooper narrating this time around doesn’t have a background as intriguing as Sarin did last issue but it fit with his initial problems with Chewie, and put him in the perfect position to make observations that would portray Chewie in a different light, and Wookies as a whole. The situations they face are interesting as they first meet with a local crime boss to intimidate him enough to give them information, and then they seek to infiltrate the base to complete their task. When you think of Chewbacca a lot of things could come to mind but the first thing that wouldn’t come to mind is subtlety, and a solid job is done in making the infiltration believable but still allowing Chewie to use his strength with plenty of action. And it’s easy to be engrossed in these events because the writing helps you imagine even little details without being overbearing, such as the smell, and you enjoy every aspect of it. And the conclusion the stormtrooper draws about Chewbacca is definitely a nice touch to the story and the character. The only problem I have with this issue is there’s still no light shed on the rebel’s actual plan and therefore the importance of these events to date. I don’t know if that’ll be the case next issue but I can almost guarantee that you’ll be excited once you see who or what is coming up next.

    SUMMARY

Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 is another solid issue in the series, and just like the previous two, it sheds light on the rebel, which in this case is Chewbacca, and ultimately gives you a greater appreciation of the character. The witty writing along with the exciting action makes for an excellent read, and using the stormtrooper with Chewie was the perfect scenario. Light still hasn’t been shed on the overall plan so hopefully that will start to happen next issue but I can say I’m very excited for it with the conclusion of this one.
