  • Star Wars Rebel Heist #2 continues with the rebellion making plans against the Empire to build on their victory at the Battle of Yavin. And despite Han Solo being captured with his new recruit, Jan, this mission involves more experienced personnel, and one with the self-described “most dangerous job on the planet.” She’s Sarin, a dancer on the pleasure planet of Feddasyr, and as expected she deals with those who have the worst vices but it’s crucial to her gathering information the rebellion sorely needs due to the frequent visits by the Imperials. Except now her cover has been blown the day she’s supposed to meet an important person in the rebellion, and even though she manages to kill her tail she knows she can’t go back to her old life now. Unsure of what to do next but knowing she had an important task to deliver a top-level security code to her rebel contact she goes to the meeting place hoping her contact would also be able to get her out safely. She was promised ahead of time that her contact would be the best the rebels had to offer and unlike Jan, who was amazed it was Han Solo, Sarin is disappointed that her contact is the one and only Princess Leia. Sarin was expecting someone who would be similar to her and capable of getting her out but with all things considered is Sarin underestimating the capabilities of Leia?

The first issue was outstanding to me with the way it set up a very intriguing story line, Han Solo’s portrayal, and the intense action sequences that hinted at an even bigger plot by the rebellion. I wasn’t particularly fond of the narrator with Han as he wasn’t shown to have much usefulness and even when it was obvious that Han’s actions were part of a bigger plan he still didn’t get it. This issue started off with the same structure introducing a character who was to meet a rebel contact but the narrator this time had more experience and was much more interesting than Jan. And if there’s one thing this series has shown to be adept at is giving a legendary rebel figure a grand, yet organic, entrance, and Princess Leia’s entrance here will definitely put a wide grin on your face because it was very timely. But it wasn’t for show as she was there to retrieve an important Imperial code that would now be tougher to acquire due to Sarin’s cover being blown, so it would fall on Leia to infiltrate the location in order to extract the code. And it was extremely impressive how all the negative assumptions Sarin made, which presumably could be made by readers who would wonder how Leia could be useful in such a dangerous situation, were shown to be underrated strengths because Leia’s capabilities were well beyond Sarin in every way. Unless you have a problem with her being portrayed as anything other than eye candy on the side of Jabba the Hut then you’ll be thoroughly impressed at all she does this issue. And the fact that this was within the bounds of a cohesive story that could be connected to the overall premise of the series made me even more excited thinking of the rebellion’s overall plan as well as gain more appreciation for what it takes to be part of it. And Sarin isn’t just a passive observer Matt Kindt uses to convey his beautifully written story but plays a role as well in the events that take place. And I had relatively high hopes of enjoying this series but now I’m completely on board and I’m anxiously anticipating the next part of the rebel’s plan and who it involves.

    SUMMARY

Star Wars Rebel Heist #2 is an excellent issue that puts this series high on my list of current series I enjoy the most as it’s thrilling from end to end, and instead of being exhausting it whet my appetite even more. It effectively takes a classic character and puts her in an exciting situation that is consistent with the character but also shows her in a new light. The overall rebel plan becomes even more intriguing as the determination of the rebellion forces becomes even more clear as well as their belief in the importance of it. Sarin is an interesting companion who also serves as a means to highlight Princess Leia’s qualities and turn any negative assumptions to admiration. And as I result I can’t wait to see what’s in store the rest of this series.
