Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #3

  • The good

Excellent developments with the Rakatan Infinite Empire finally revealing its hand. Fascinating way the Force is handled

  • The bad

Poor communication on the part of the Je'daii as to what was occurring early on to at least take precautions

  • The ugly

  • Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #3 continues the war between the Rakatan Infinite Empire and the Je’daii but with the capture of Daegen Lok and Xesh the Empire seems to have the upper hand finally. They were both blind to Trill being a spy for the Empire and they would pay dearly for it. However it’s not so simple because even in the midst of a battle against the overwhelming force of the Empire, Shae Koda can still sense that there’s a terrible darkness surrounding Xesh and she fears for him. The fact that Lok was supposed to be leading the troops and no one knows where he’s currently at clearly adds to that feeling because there are other Je’daii losing themselves on the battlefield as they aren’t faring very well as a whole. But even Shae doesn’t fully know what’s happening with Xesh as Predor Skal’nas is restoring his memories and revealing to him the truth of what has been occurring since he first left. Xesh knows it to be true and recalls he was the force hound that found Tython for the Empire and knew the conquest wouldn’t be easy with the Je’daii there. So a plan was forged then and the truth becomes clear to him now. Will this truth result in the destruction of the Je’daii and the ultimate victory for the Empire or is there still hope in the form of Shae Koda?

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this series and the ending last issue was very good, however I see now that I had no idea how good the events that would take place next would be. This issue was amazing and uses everything that was done leading up to this moment to create a truly mind-blowing chain of events. Even though the start occurs early on in the issue I still don’t want to fully mention it because it was that good to me and I want the reader to experience it for him or herself. Predor Skal’nas didn’t come off to me as a truly threatening figure prior to this issue, which elevates him in that regard, but even he doesn’t compare to who emerges here at least in terms of impressions. And the feeling that I had in earlier issues that the Rakatan Infinite Empire’s army was just forcesaber fodder was not only removed completely but the fear others had of the Empire’s forces finally made sense.

I also love the way this series has dealt with the force, including the balance between the light and the dark sides. The way it’s explored and the revelations connected to the force have been fascinating and there are zero complaints about the way the subject matter here is handled. And even though the events here take place long before the events in A New Hope so there’s more leeway regarding what can happen, I’m still overwhelmed with the satisfying feeling of being able to enjoy the ride without being beaten over the head with the sense of inevitability. And what a ride it is.

    SUMMARY

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #3 is just about everything one could want in an issue. The twist is executed perfectly, the reputation of the Rakatan Infinite Empire is shown to have been well-deserved, and there’s still hope, or at least in my assumption, for the Je’daii based on what was laid out in earlier issues. If all I wrote for my review was “buy this issue” you would understand because you have to experience it from beginning to end, and like Daegen Lok you’ll see how much was underestimated. I highly recommend this series and if you’re a Star Wars fan in any way there’s no excuse for you to be missing out on this.
