Star Wars Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir #4

  • The good

Battle between Darth Sidious and Mother Talzin takes center stage and comes to a satisfying conclusion

  • The bad

Darth Maul's forces are treated dismissively. Unsurprising in more than one way.

  • The ugly

  • Star Wars Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir #4 is the conclusion to the series and has Darth Sidious enter into the foray attempting to finish Darth Maul and Mother Talzin once and for all. It opens up with Darth Maul communicating with the Pykes and Black Sun about the result of them joining his cause, and it not being as profitable as he originally claimed. They tell him how it’s been costly for them and they’ve lost planets and outposts during this alliance. Darth Maul states to them that they have to see the bigger picture, which is the fact that with Darth Sidious out of the way they will be able to take the entire galaxy, so of course they would get paid very well. It’s not just this shaky allegiance that he has to worry about because there’s the matter of Count Dooku, who is being held captive but still as loyal as ever to Sidious. However he has a plan to use Dooku, and it starts to become clear when he leads him to an underground temple on the planet of Dathomir. The intention all along wasn’t to kill Dooku but use him to facilitate the return of Mother Talzin. Meanwhile, Darth Sidious is confident that the plan he originally put in motion is still perfectly on track as he and Grievous head towards the planet. But with this recent development in addition to the Black Suns and Pykes waiting in the wings, has Darth Sidious’ plan finally fallen apart?

This series has been enjoyable from the standpoint of wanting a continuation of Clone Wars and Darth Maul’s story, and despite the story not being particularly complex or suspenseful, it has progressed fairly fast so there’s always a flurry of activity. It hasn’t raised the bar for the Clone Wars series in general so any issues you had with that will still be present. That much is evident from the ease in which Darth Sidious tracks Darth Maul and where he took Dooku, since a simple precaution could’ve been taken to prepare for that. However, once again this series benefits from the fast flowing story as answers are given about Mother Talzin’s current location and predicament, and what their plan has been all along. It was an interesting twist that simultaneously made me feel more engrossed in the issue while bemoaning the faulty execution of it. The action wouldn’t involve the mercenaries working with Darth Maul, and the way in which they’re treated dismissively felt like it was just a neat way to tie up that loose end. Considering that was done to focus on Sidious being a part of the action more than makes up for them being excluded because the main battle is very enjoyable. I did want to see Darth Maul in more action last issue but Mother Talzin versus Sidious is an electrifying battle so I didn’t even notice that his battle with Grievous took backstage. So without any spoilers, does this issue offer a satisfying conclusion? I’ll say that events were satisfying but the conclusion wasn’t surprising, and I mean that in more ways than just knowing the fate of many of the characters from the movies. But if you’ve been enjoying the ride so far for what it is then you’ll enjoy the ending.

    SUMMARY

Star Wars Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir #4 ends with a satisfying series of events but unsurprising with all things considered. The plans from both sides were completely revealed and they were engrossing. The mercenaries working with Darth Maul were treated dismissively this issue in order to avoid addressing their involvement in a meaningful way, which wouldn’t be the first time a matter was simplified. But since the battle between Darth Sidious and Mother Talzin would take center stage, and it would be electrifying, I’m glad the focus was on them and not the peripheral players. So if you’ve been enjoying this series as a continuation of the animated Clone Wars series or you’re a fan of Darth Maul, you won’t be disappointed with this issue.
