Shaper #2

  • The good

Enjoyable new characters deepening the story and increasing the stakes. Great shaper action

  • The bad

Still hasn't elaborated on why Shapers are targeted by Caliphate

  • The ugly

  • Shaper #2 continues with Spry seeking the help of a legendary gunman in order to free his mother from the Caliphate Army. And he’ll definitely need help as this issue opens up with another Shaper arriving at Spry’s father’s house, which has been the location of a recent battle. She finds evidence of the Caliphate Army being involved and capturing him, so she’s too late. And that’s because Cal Victus, the Caliphate leader, is already torturing him trying to acquire the location of the Shaper’s homeworld, which is a guarded secret. But Cal warns Orin, Spry’s father, that he has already captured his wife so if the location isn’t divulged then he will kill her in front of him. Meanwhile, Spry is looking for someone called Rand the Galaxian, who he believes will help him find his mother. But Spry doesn’t know where to start outside of knowing the general area where he tends to be. Seeing that Spry is still a beginner in using his Shaper abilities, and he doesn’t even know what Rand looks like, is he in over his head? Or will he find more allies than he expected in his quest to rescue his mother?

It was good that the first issue did a great job in introducing the reader to the world it was set in because it was easy to be pulled into the events taking place. And Spry came off as an interesting protagonist in a relatively unique situation with his Shaper heritage but without any experience using it. The start of this issue focuses more on actual Shapers and their dedication to their homeland. This was through the new antagonist, Cal Victus, the leader of the Caliphate who has his own powers, attempting to torture the information out of Spry’s father. Even though Victus’s reason for wanting to locate the Shapers’s homeworld wasn’t detailed, this was still a very enjoyable introduction. Of course, the assumption was to destroy all the Shapers but no further information was given as to why the Shapers were targeted as opposed to another group. I expect this to be elaborated on in future issues so I’m intrigued about Victus’s true motives because he came off as appropriately imposing and menacing for the leader of the Caliphate.
However, the bulk of this issue would focus on Spry and his encounters with new characters who would eventually aid him on his quest to rescue his mother. Rand the Galaxian seemed to be a typical hard-nosed gunslinger but his connection to Spry’s mother as well as others who would be crucial in advancing this quest suggests otherwise. And besides, he seems pretty cool too. There was even a little humor when introducing other characters, and I appreciated all the introductions not being the same. And there was plenty of action this issue, including Spry’s shaper ability being on display. So I’ve been enjoying the pace of this series, and the way its handled its characters and overall story so far. And now I’m more interested in what made the Shapers a unique target to Cal Victus.
