Resurrectionists #5

  • The good

Maya being unlocked and scheme against Lennox moving forward. Events in ancient Egypt are intriguing again.

  • The bad

Still doesn't provide answers and the avoidance makes other events feel somewhat gimmicky

  • The ugly

  • Resurrectionists #5 continues with Maya finally being unlocked while Jericho and the others attempt to thwart Lennox’s plan. This issue opens up with Maya, aka Quinn talking to Adele about her encounter with Jericho. She inquires about why Adele testified against Jericho about the construction accident considering they were married, and Adele states it’s because Jericho wasn’t the same man anymore. She states that he was using drugs and having sleepless nights, and as a result believed he was reckless with his design. Maya tells Adele that the reason she inquired about her testimony was because of concerns that maybe one day Adele would turn on her but the real reason is because of the visions she had when with Jericho. Maya hasn’t been fully unlocked yet but these experiences have brought her to the verge of recalling everything about her prior lives and her role in the current events with the Resurrectionists. However, she’s not a part of the current plan, which has Jericho, Lena and Gardner seeking to stop Lennox’s plan to have them killed after they deliver the final piece for his scheme. Instead of repeating the mistakes made in former lives to fall in this final trap, they instead have the courier intercepted by police. Can the trio one up Lennox and elude his scheme or has he been able to get too far ahead of them for them to catch up now?

I’ve been anxiously looking forward to more answers being given in this series that would tie the characters and overall plot together more. Last issue did identify more characters and who they were in former lives going back to ancient Egypt but didn’t shed much light on this entire cycle. How did Pharaoh Herihor discover this secret of resurrection? Why does the cycle originate in ancient Egypt? Or did this cycle always exist for everyone and not just the Resurrectionists? This issue would reveal more characters connected to this overall resurrection cycle but since the context of their actions still wasn’t entirely clear, some of them just felt like names. There would be some story progression, mainly character development, and it was entertaining to see Maya go through the process of being unlocked and her discoveries. Even the sequence of events in ancient Egypt would progress, and without giving anything away, certain things would parallel the present. And with Rosenzweig’s artwork, these events were delightful to see.
However, this issue wasn’t as engrossing as I wanted it to be, and that’s because the crux of the matter is still being skipped over. So what was initially fascinating is starting to feel as if it’s just a gimmick, and just ties characters’ former lives together and the process of being unlocked. I do know that’s not the case but my point is after 5 issues in, and a plan to change an endless cycle being close to an end, it would help to have more answers about the overall situation. So hopefully that’ll be the case next issue.

    SUMMARY

Resurrectionists #5 is a relatively entertaining issue that suffers from not providing answers about the crux of the matter resulting in the events not feeling as engrossing as they should. The way Maya is unlocked is exciting, and the story progression in ancient Egypt reminds me of how this series started off, which is a good thing. But after seeing everyone else unlocked in similar manner with answers still lacking, it almost feels gimmicky since the greater context remains unclear. The overall premise is still fascinating but I really hope some things are tied together next issue to make the picture clearer.
