Rai #6

  • The good

Phenomenal issue that moves the story forward with the plot against Father taking shape. Great character development and brief battle

  • The bad

  • The ugly

  • Rai #6 has Rai and Spylocke recruiting more of Father’s enemies as part of a grand scheme to destroy the tyrant and bring New Japan crashing down. To understand how Father could have so many enemies one would have to look at all he did over the years terrorizing the population and utter disregard for life. A thousand years ago Father used to send nets into space searching through debris and other materials in the solar system in order to discover new life or technology. He ended up discovering an ancient alien, which he decided to have dissected and spliced in order to create a new race. He combined his technology with the alien hybrids and turned them into creatures he would unleash on Earth for sport, and to satisfy the aliens’ blood lust. However, one of those creatures escaped and remained on New Japan, and over the centuries has dedicated its life to being Father’s enemy. And this creature, Izak, has become almost a legend during this time. This is the story Izak tells Momo, the Positron who has free will and wants to destroy the system that would dispose of her. She realized the secret to her awakening was the Livewire technology, so when she came in contact with the original source she had all sorts of revelations regarding Father’s true nature and how he was created. But the two of them can’t do it alone as Rai seeks to find Momo, and Spylocke has plans to contact a version of Silk that would allow him to get to Earth. But with their repeated attempts with different versions of Rai to overthrow Father, what makes this time any different?

This series has been a sci-fi lover’s paradise, and unlike Father’s New Japan, there has been no hidden negatives to destroy the foundation of this series. I’ve been loving pretty much everything about it from the rich characters to the wonderful futuristic world. And Rai has been an incredible protagonist but this issue demonstrates that this series isn’t as engrossing as it is just because of him since he doesn’t make a small appearance until close to the end of this issue. From the very beginning with the gorgeous artwork giving life to this advanced technology and alien lifeforms, this issue pulls you right in just like one of the nets. I’m not sure how long I spent staring at the pages above but it’s also due to the excellent way the story is just written. Izak’s introduction and threatening stature is introduced fluidly, and then connected to Momo’s plan flawlessly. The positron storyline has been exciting and captures the imagination in a similar manner to all the great AI/Replicant storylines in the sci-fi genre, making all of this a fully realized world from the good to the bad. And the way Livewire is so crucial to New Japan and the many lifeforms inhabiting it has so much potential. And Momo’s character development has definitely been paying off since the first issue, and now her story comes to the forefront, shedding light on the entire situation. And it only became more intense once Rai would show up.
Even Spylocke’s storyline would be engrossing with the different versions of Silk. Not much has been shown about Earth aside from what Father has been doing to it so I’m very intrigued about seeing it or what has happened to it. And just like Momo and Izak, Spylocke’s actions this issue would make him a much more interesting character. It’s remarkable how much was actually covered in this issue and how the story progressed including Lula’s plan without this issue feeling cluttered or exhausting. That may not be a technological achievement but it’s still very impressive.

    SUMMARY

Rai #6 is another incredible issue, and at this point I expect nothing less. This series has been a sci-fi lover’s wet dream, and this issue just adds to the engrossing world that Matt Kindt has created since the beginning. Izak is a wonderful addition to recent events, and knowing other aliens like him were unleashed on Earth even makes Spylocke’s trip more intriguing. And Momo’s character development creates so much potential in her story line as well as other Positrons and anything connected to Livewire. There wasn’t much Rai this issue but it was about the advancing plot against Father, and it’s all coming together so beautifully.
