Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens #1

  • The good

Seriously? It’s Predator vs. Dredd vs. Aliens

  • The bad

Another mad scientist stirring up trouble

  • The ugly

  • It’s titles like Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens #1 that make comics such a great medium. For a crossover like this to occur in a movie it would take endless Hollywood politics. This is a mash-up I never knew I wanted, but I am glad Dark Horse Comics decided to put this violent soup together. If you are still reading at this point, I’m gathering you know the details of the combatants. From here on in, I will reference the comic as PDA (heh) for short.

After an immediate introduction, the Predator kicks everything off, albeit in a different way as it is the hunted this time, not the hunted. This is our introduction to Cursed Earth. It’s a place miles away from Mega-City One where the infamous Judge Dredd patrols. On the hunt for the leader of a group of “robot worshipping apocalypse cultists” (If I had a dollar for every time I typed that), Dredd unwittingly finds himself stepping into an even bigger set of problems.

The first issue is a nice introduction to get the story going, all of the major players are introduced setting up what should be an awesome second issue. My only complaint is that yet again a scheming scientist seems to be attempting to use the Xenomorphs. History has told us over the years, that this plan doesn’t end well.

With such an unnatural crossover, it helps to have a good team holding the reigns. Luckily, this is an area where PDA doesn’t fall short. Chris Mooneyham’s art is absolutely gorgeous, capturing the feel of all three franchises seamlessly. The environments, Dredd, the mutants, and the Predator jump off the page. I am looking forward to Chris’s take on the Aliens next issue. The writing is sharp, John Layman nails the feel of a summer blockbuster. The dialogue is quick and easy to digest, making for a smooth and easy read.

    SUMMARY

Solid start to PDA, I look forward to seeing the forthcoming issues as the characters and action become more fleshed out. As a fan of all three franchises (I’ll confess my Dredd knowledge is all from the movies), I wasn’t too sure this was necessary. But now I’m ready to dive in headfirst, let’s just hope a facehugger isn’t there to give me a welcoming kiss.
