Ninjak #5

  • The good

Kannon face to face with Ninjak. Weaponeer plot gets deeper. Flashback story is intriguing.

  • The bad

Part of the battle between Kannon and Ninjak is skipped

  • The ugly

  • Ninjak #5 has him taking on Kannon for his position in Weaponeer and the future of his operation. Since Ninjak was able to successfully infiltrate Kannon’s systems and take over his manufacturing role, Ninjak doesn’t need to maintain his cover so he’s able to respond to Roku’s sudden attack on him. Roku’s attacks shreds his clothes revealing the costume underneath, and Kannon recognizes the fact that he’s not Henry Collins, as he’s claimed to be. Down but not completely beaten, Roku stops attack Ninjak, and it appears she and Kannon have a way of communicating he can’t perceive as Kannon calls her off. He wants to take on Ninjak himself, and Ninjak takes him lightly until he’s punched through a solid wall. Even if Ninjak is able to defeat Kannon somehow, since his cover is blown how can he continue his mission to infiltrate Weaponeer when they seem to have a way to communicate that he can’t understand? And how does this all tie into events from Ninjak’s childhood?

If there was ever a story line that was perfect for a character and highlighted all that made that character so appealing this Weaponeer story line would be such for Ninjak. It’s had just about everything from the perfect villains to the use of Ninjak’s range of abilities. When Roku seemingly recognized Ninjak I was excited about the possibilities connected to that answer since Roku and Kannon have been excellent villains. So this issue was off to a great start when Ninjak and Roku were engaged in what would appear to be a rematch of their previous fight when Kannon called her off. Even though I really like Roku as a character it was good to see Kannon finally get to battle Ninjak, and his strength was surprising. And Clay Mann’s artwork was so good in capturing everyone’s moves that I almost felt Kannon’s punch when Ninjak went flying through that wall. And this wasn’t just a battle of sheer strength and I enjoyed Ninjak’s strategy demonstrating once again how this series has capitalized on every facet of his abilities making them even more impressive. I won’t give away how everything unfolded but the way things were said about Weaponeer considering Roku being told to stand aside for the time being only made it that much more exciting. And considering the sheer number of people involved in Weaponeer this can be a very versatile overarching story with various scenarios.
This issue would also have flashbacks into Ninjak’s childhood continuing with him hiding from his butler and only emerging when he saw his parents were back. For a minute I wondered where it was going based on what has been hinted at in previous stories about Ninjak’s troubled past with his parents since it didn’t seem to be that way. And I admit that I still don’t know where it’ll ultimately go but the discovery made here definitely has me more intrigued about these flashbacks. Can’t wait to see young Colin’s next move.
The short story at the end of this issue has Colin fighting off an attacker who killed his handler, and as a separate story it was pretty cool and should be the start of a more interesting mission storyline for Colin at that point in his career.

    SUMMARY

Ninjak #5 is an engrossing issue that continues the excellence exhibited throughout this series and makes the overall Weaponeer story line more intriguing. Kannon gets to unleash his power for a few panels and the strategy Ninjak uses is entertaining and clever, although a part of the battle missing takes away from it slightly. And now I can’t wait for the next story arc, the start of the Shadow Wars.
