Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook #5 is the conclusion to the series and has Mycroft and Adler attempting to stop Mr. Mason. It opens up with Mycroft telling Adler the story of how his mother died and the impact on Sherlock. He states that Sherlock was obsessed with uncovering a secret behind their mother’s death. Sherlock believed it was murder and wanted to prove that it wasn’t just tuberculosis. He was so consumed with proving his theory that he didn’t even stop to attend the funeral.

Mycroft tells Adler that even though their mother taught them so much his view is that no good deed goes unpunished. He believes that detachment makes him more clever than Sherlock. This plays a role in him choosing to follow the lead to locate the weapons instead of meeting with Kerry’s kidnappers. He calls it a calculated risk and believes it will pay off. But will they be able to stop Mr. Mason and rescue Kerry in time?

I appreciated how this issue started with Mycroft giving the history of his mother’s death and Sherlock’s reaction. This solid character development shed light on Mycroft’s behavior and strengthen the relationship with Adler. And the sequence regarding his engagement did show some growth in terms of his current situation with Adler. So their partnership was enjoying knowing the trust they had in each other as they set about trying to stop Mason.

It was fascinating to see Mr. Mason’s plot fall apart knowing that the way Mycroft and Adler thwarted it would be revealed. As always, there’s something uniquely satisfying reading the explanation on how it all happened. And knowing how they worked together as a team, and what the future could hold for these characters was just as exciting. So I hope this isn’t the end of Mycroft Holmes.

SUMMARY

Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook #5 is a solid conclusion to what has been an extremely enjoyable series. The character development at the start of this issue sets the stage for the entertaining interactions between Mycroft and Holmes. The story unfolds with a smooth pace, and the action is as exciting as it’s been all series. Even though this one has been completely satisfying, I do hope to see more of Mycroft Holmes from Titan Comics.
