  • Mass Effect Discovery #1 is the start of a new series based on the video game and published by Dark Horse Comics. It follows the story of Tiran Kandros, a Turian investigating the Andromeda Initiative. This issue opens up with a Salarian undergoing a biotic implant procedure.  The limits are being pushed but the risk to his health is deemed acceptable. But the results seem to exceed even his expectations.

Meanwhile, the Turians are concerned about the actions of a private space program seeking to explore the Andromeda Galaxy. The Turian Hierarchy believes there’s more to this organization due to the massive ships they’re building. They don’t know if they’re secretly trying to build a private army or if they’re conducting illegal experiments with Geth Technology. Can Tiran successfully infiltrate the organization to get the answers the Turians need? Or will his actions lead the universe closer to war?

    Mass Effect Discovery #1

Even though I’m a huge fan of the game series, I still believe Mass Effect offers plenty for sci-fi fans who’ve never played a game. Discovery touches on aspects of the new Mass Effect Andromeda, however playing isn’t a requirement to enjoy this issue. That’s because Tiran was presented as a character whose motivations were simple to understand. The experienced soldier, possibly suffering from survivor’s guilt, who still wanted to prove himself. And his mission was to investigate a shady organization making questionable moves.

The story unfolded at a good pace with Tiran arriving on Earth and making contact with the Andromeda Initiative. The undercover operation got off to a smooth start with Tiran arranging an attack on himself to draw the Initiative’s attention. This sequence was entertaining and believable without being unnecessarily drawn out. That’s because the task the Initiative had for him was much more intriguing. The sci-fi elements connected to the Initiative’s latest experiment were fascinating.  This issue was taking advantage of one of the strengths of the Mass Effect series, which is the seemingly endless possibilities in its universe. And so the hunt for Shio’leth Vas Novarra began.

    Mass Effect Discovery #1
The hunt for Vas Novarra was entertaining for a number of reasons. The questions the Initiative had for were actually interesting questions and I wanted to know the answers too. And Tiran and his partner seemed to be a good fit. Also, they weren’t the only ones hunting Vas Novarra. So the plot deepened making for an even better scenario. I can only imagine how good the action sequences will be once these opposing sides meet up. I don’t know if that’ll be next issue but I do know this series is off to a really good start.

    SUMMARY

Mass Effect Discovery #1 is an electrifying start to the series with an engrossing setup and enjoyable characters. As a Mass Effect fan, I’m thrilled about this story angle because it’s ripe with potential to capitalize on everything that makes the Mass Effect universe fascinating. Tiran infiltrating the Andromeda Initiative is handled well. And I’m looking forward to the answers he’ll discover on his mission. I can’t wait for issue #2.
