Ivar, Timewalker #6

  • The good

Neela's character development and interesting discovery. Future Neela's behavior makes everything more intriguing

  • The bad

Very little of Ivar and his plan. Gilad and Armstrong's quarrel feels forced

  • The ugly

  • Ivar, Timewalker #6 continues with Ivar planning to infiltrate the Prometheans’ base with his 2 brothers, Gilad and Armstrong. It opens up with Ivar talking with Lurker about the type of spaceship he needs him to build, and how it has to be flawless or else it’ll fail. The Lurker states that he can make it, and at least he’ll be more mature about it than Gilad and Armstrong have been since getting on the spaceship. Even though Ivar initially told them that the other wouldn’t be present, he needs his immortal brothers in order to stand a chance against the Prometheans. Gilad and Armstrong quarrel about minor things as Gilad takes offense to Armstrong’s comments about his hair being gray, and similar comments. Despite the jocular nature of their quarrel, Ivar points them to a more serious matter and that’s the use of zelig chips to reduce hostile responses in others so the journey could be successful. Ivar leaves them in charge of guarding the Lurker while he attempts to find a pilot for their ship. But can he trust the two of them with such an important task? And what does future Neela seek to gain by manipulating time at this point when she already holds so much power?

This story arc has been pretty entertaining so far, and the mysteries contained in it have been intriguing. Whether it’s trying to figure out what future Neela wants with her past self or exactly what happened that has Ivar tied into these events, it’s been enjoyable. But even though the comedic wit has been pretty much on point throughout this series, I wasn’t really feeling the Gilad and Armstrong exchange because it just felt forced with them being overly dramatic about the banter. It did, however, maintain the tone of the series in making each issue a fun read. I would’ve preferred to see them take on the guards watching the station instead of just the aftermath or a little more about Gilad’s experiences with the zelig chips. I’m glad that the Lurker didn’t have an extensive role in this issue because it hasn’t been one of my favorite characters this series. The story would pick up once the two Neelas were shown and more about the experiment being performed was revealed. I won’t spoil anything but it was fascinating to see the discovery and the subsequent reaction to it. This was the only real character development, and raised even more interesting questions about everything occurring. And it once again made the way this series has treated time travel pretty exciting. And I have to admit I’m somewhat impressed with Neela’s character development from the start of this series. And there would be some action towards the end of this issue but it was more of a good setup for the start of next issue to be more exciting. And even though it would’ve been great to have more answers regarding Ivar’s plans, I am looking forward to the next issue more due to the developments here.

    SUMMARY

Ivar, Timewalker #6 is a fun issue that makes the overall situation more intriguing with Neela’s discovery and subsequent reaction. It’s good that this issue capitalized on having 2 Neelas together and not just in terms of the banter but the interesting questions that are raised here. Gilad and Armstrong aren’t particularly useful this issue and I’m hoping next issue the setup pays off. This issue doesn’t reveal Ivar’s hand, and I’m looking forward to seeing where things go from here.
