Ivar, Timewalker #12

  • The good

Satisfying conclusion to the series and its use of time travel. Remains true to the characters and connects to earlier events

  • The bad

The Prometheans didn't come off as more formidable antagonists. More info about the Seven Sages

  • The ugly

  • Ivar, Timewalker #12 is the conclusion to the series and has Ivar and Ank attempting to stop the Prometheans and the destruction of the multiverse. It opens up with the two of them on Oblivi-2 hunting for the Null Generator. The problem is they don’t know what it looks like and despite Ivar having a few weapons at his disposal he doesn’t know how to use them. Well that and the fact they have to watch out for the Prometheans considering its the Prometheans’ home base. So it’s good thing that Ank is there to help. However, that doesn’t prevent them from being surprised by the Mistress, i.e. a reconstructed Neela. She attacks and all 3 engage in battle until it ends with Ank destroying Neela. Yet the 2 of them are utterly surprised when they’re attacked by 2 dozen more Neelas all stating nothing is forever, the battlecry to kill the Timewalker. How can there be so many Neela’s and how can Ivar and Ank contend with the full might of the Prometheans?

    Ivar, Timewalker #12
Considering the way everything came full circle in the most entertaining way last issue I was really satisfied with the series overall. And knowing the way the series has had some interesting twists, I contemplated more about what I felt this final issue needed to address than the details of what would happen. And for me a constant has been Ivar and Neela’s relationship throughout the various situations and dimensions they’ve been in. So I wanted this issue to at least stay true to that in the sense that it was compelling and reflective of their respective states and the overall series. Other than that I needed it to be entertaining and deliver a solid ending, or beginning since it did involve time traveling, so it didn’t feel like a waste of time to pay attention to the finer details. So thankfully this issue did deliver on the major fronts and was still entertaining in its unique way.

The start of this issue did address how the Mistress was first introduced and the misplaced hatred for Ivar.  It was nothing more than the Prometheans twisted manipulations based on last issue’s event. And I enjoyed how the action packed start still found a way to explain that and make it clear. And it was good to see Ank get in on the action including the humor about her actually being female. The action sequence was just great fun but the significance of the Prometheans using Neela’s likeness wasn’t downplayed.

The story unfolded very well, and I won’t give away any spoilers but the search for the undefined generator had some interesting twists. What I really liked about the way this story unfolded was that it had more substance than just a search for a device, and all that occurred also established a broader context for the Timewalker mythology. In other words, the story was engrossing and made me feel a little bit of everything…in a good way. The Prometheans didn’t seem as formidable but at least their overall plan did. And the way everything was resolved was satisfying although some interesting questions did arise as a result. But those questions are more related to how interesting a new Timewalker series could be based on the way this one ended. Or is it the way it began?

    SUMMARY

Ivar, Timewalker #12 is an exciting conclusion to the series and successfully wraps up just about everything introduced in these 12 issues. I like how it’s true to its handling of time travel throughout, and as a result creates a great addition to the overall Valiant Universe going forward. The Prometheans don’t strike me as memorable as antagonists and I still have questions about the Seven Sages but I’m satisfied with how this series ended. Now I just hope that in some ways this is just the beginning because this has been one of the more highly entertaining series this year.
