Imperium #7

  • The good

Great character development portraying both characters in a formidable light.

  • The bad

Not sure how flashes of the reason for Divinity's imprisonment interfered with events

  • The ugly

  • Imperium #7 has Toyo Harada facing the awesome power of Divinity while trying to remember the sequence of events after leaving the Leviathan. He remembers his powers reactivating after the psiot dampener was destroyed, and he temporarily lost control of his powers and in turn ruptured the Leviathan. However, he also remembers saving his team and them returning to the sea but now he’s suddenly old and waking up in the forest in a quiet land. He looks around and sees his team behaving differently, and as if they’ve all somehow had their deepest hopes fulfilled granting them a state of bliss. Harada doesn’t understand what’s going on, even when Divinity shows himself and asks Harada why he’s fighting the paradise granted to him. But then once again the situation changes and he’s in a completely different place. This time he’s in a hospital in his Foundation Zone, and it’s fully operational offering the best care in the world. He questions his team about what’s going on and they respond by telling them he must be having some kind of episode to not understand what’s going on. He scans his team’s minds to see if they’re real, and yes they’re very real but he doesn’t remember any of this. What happened after the Leviathan was breached that created this situation where even the powerful Harada doesn’t understand what’s occurring?

When I read the conclusion to the last issue I felt Divinity making an appearance in an already excellent series was a great idea. Especially considering how much I enjoyed the character in his own series. So when this issue started off with Harada not knowing what was going on I knew that was due to Divinity’s powers, and I was excited that this issue wasted no time in getting to it. And for those unfamiliar with Divinity would have a great introduction to the character. Even though the interactions consisted of Harada being placed in various situations each time he got closer to the truth, there were still some great exchanges between the two characters representative of their respective statures. And the panel with Harada saying Divinity wasn’t real while Divinity loomed over him was just phenomenal. It could be viewed on so many levels. And these exchanges kept the tone of the series and didn’t make things simply black and white, and that was reflected in the way Harada treated the fulfillment of his vision with the Foundation Zone. Harada attempting to piece together the sequence of events was engrossing as it revealed some things about both characters. And considering some questions weren’t answered in Divinity’s series I was completely dialed in to these events. I won’t give any spoilers about this issue but if you read Divinity then you know how he was imprisioned and that one part manifests itself again here. So I’m hoping next issue can clarify that as well because this issue left me with no doubt that things will only get better as the story unfolds.

    SUMMARY

Imperium #7 is an exciting issue that takes two juggernauts and creates an interesting scenario that develops both characters making them more intriguing. Harada comtemplating the chain of events since the Leviathan was ruptured reveals so much about him and Divinity, and unravels these events in an entertaining way. Despite no update on the condition of the Foundation Zone, this issue addresses the true motives and attitude in achieving that goal in a great way. I’m glad Divinity will be in more than one issue and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
