Imperium #4

  • The good

Broken Angel adds an exciting new dynamic to current events. Raises the stakes for next issue placing goals in sight

  • The bad

Most of issue felt separate from the focus of the current storyline

  • The ugly

  • Imperium #4 has a mysterious being possessing Angela Peace’s body known as Broken Angel designing a secret device for Project Rising Spirit. Disaster struck when she was leading a team of 3 with a psiot named Center Point with the ability to access higher dimensions. The mission was for them to explore these higher dimensions to understand the power as well as recording their observations on the way to a mysterious crystalline structure. And the mission seemed to be a success until they encounter an unusual being that opens a portal to another dimension and snatches Angela. It removes her eyes completely as if they never existed and returns her body to her terrified companions before they can return. The being possessing Angela goes by the name Broken Angel, and gives a message of peace declaring that “all is absolute perfection.” But who or what is this being possessing Angela, and what could a being from a higher dimension want with Project Rising Spirit? And how will this impact Gravedog’s treatment considering he was sent back by Harada’s forces?

At first I was wondering if I somehow skipped an issue due to the way this one started with Angela and a team entering a higher dimension to explore instead of a continuation of Gravedog’s situation. This issue did eventually address Gravedog’s situation since being returned by Harada but it felt secondary to what was occurring with Broken Angel. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing because the Broken Angel story line was actually intriguing even if it felt slightly misplaced for most of the issue compared to the events that took place in the prior 3 issues. I was fascinated by the interpretation of higher dimensions and how the team was treating this scientific expedition. And Doug Braithwaite’s artwork was great for conveying the essence of this dimension they could barely understand. So initially as a separate story this was entertaining because there was a question of what Broken Angel wanted as a scientist considering its capabilities exceeded everyone at Project Rising Spirit. When the story progressed to include Gravedog Broken Angel’s context in terms of recent events started to become clearer. And I won’t give away any spoilers but ultimately this issue does make Harada’s plans more exciting since Broken Angel’s presence provides a unique wrinkle in the situation and serves as a catalyst for the next series of events. And I won’t say that it felt gimmicky considering Broken Angel seemed to come out of nowhere since this issue did explain the process well. However, I am curious as to what the true endgame is here and how these higher dimensions will factor into things going forward.

    SUMMARY

Imperium #4 is an engrossing issue that introduces an intriguing new character while raising the stakes greatly for both Project Rising Spirit and Harada. The majority of this issue seems to depart from recent developments with Harada and Gravedog but ultimately ties back into their respective goals. The introduction of higher dimensions through a psiot is fascinating, and creates so much potential going forward. And the conclusion of this issue means that things are only beginning to heat up, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one.
