Harbinger Omegas #3

  • The good

Harada responding to the world's attempts to stop him. The details of establishing a sovereign state combined with the action made this a very engrossing conclusion

  • The bad

Part of Peter's story felt out of place

  • The ugly

  • Harbinger Omegas #3 is the conclusion to the series and has Toyo Harada seeking to crush the final resistance to his plan to establish a sovereign nation in Africa. After struggling to destroy the fighter jets and planes carrying anti-psiot tech, he has to take a moment to gather himself after being flung into the ocean. He believes that he sees Peter but it’s just a temporary connection due to their powers and Harada’s attempt to still fight him. However Peter still wants no part of what’s occurring in the world and doesn’t get involved. So Harada refocuses on the strike force attacking his new country and coordinates his team of psiots who are able to make light work out of the remaining forces. Seeing this, the U.S. President assesses the international situation before requesting to get a hold of Rising Spirit. It’s not just the governments that are watching this and responding but the people as well, and some of them call themselves the Scions of Harada and form their own uprisings. But Harada isn’t done and has one final move he wants to make, and that’s to visit the U.S. President face to face. Will Peter Stanchek find want he needs in order to join this battle or is he too far gone in his own world to care even at this dire stage?

When I first started this series I was blown away by the characters and the situation that unfolded, and the main reason for that was Toyo Harada. As I wrote in my review of the first issue, I wasn’t that familiar with Peter but it seemed as if there would be some great confrontation between the 2 characters in this series. However, this series has actually done an excellent job with Harada vs. the world, and setting the stage for an even more intriguing situation going forward. So the comparison again between the 2 at the start of this issue would end quickly, and the focus would be on Harada continuing his plan to establish a sovereign nation. The action would be just as intense and as beautifully drawn as the previous 2 issues but more because of the awesome display of psiot power and not suspense like last issue. And I really appreciate how this series hasn’t sidestepped real issues that could arise if a superpowered megalomaniac decided to take over a swath of land in a country but has also made these details entertaining. However Peter’s particular situation wouldn’t be AS engrossing but still enjoyable. The part with him under the sea worked metaphorically but felt slightly out-of-place considering the real situations being addressed throughout the issue. The way Tull wanted to use Hathaway to get to Peter was pretty smooth, although I wonder what will motivate him to move forward as a character. I am glad that there wouldn’t be a weak, forced confrontation, and that’s only part of the reason why I’m looking forward to the next series with them because there were so many things to love about this one.

    SUMMARY

Harbinger Omegas #3 is an extremely solid and entertaining conclusion to the series as it creates an intriguing new status quo for Harada and the world. Harada establishing his sovereign state was even more riveting due to the action as well as the smaller details including the independent rising of groups calling themselves the Scions of Harada. Peter’s story was a little less engrossing due to an aspect of it feeling out-of-place in the midst of so much occurring with Harada. However, I’m very satisfied the confrontation between the two wasn’t simplified, and so I’m looking forward to seeing how events unfold from this point on.
