Harbinger Omegas #2

  • The good

Amazing story progression and character development. Harada and the world's response to the current situation. Artwork is incredible again

  • The bad

Peter's role in upcoming events is unclear since he didn't have a maor role outside of Harada's reflections

  • The ugly

  • Harbinger Omegas #2 continues with Toyo Harada clearing an area in Somalia to use as his sovereign state for the Foundation. He’s reflecting on how things got to this point with his secret abilities exposed during his battle with Peter Stanchek. And ever since then the world has turned on him forcing him to take drastic actions and use violence to achieve his goals. However he’s been improvising as he goes along with those around him unaware of this fact. So when he addresses those who have fallen before him whether hostages on the U.S.S. Bush or in the Somalia Coast he gives them the option to leave unharmed or stay. And if they stay they will be part of his society, which he declares will have freedom, no poverty, inequality, extremism and war. And he declares this the Foundation Age. Uninterested in his words and frightened by his display of his powers, the majority leave with only those begging for help staying. However, the world isn’t standing idly by since Harada possesses a nuclear arsenal now due to the U.S.S. Bush and slaughtering so many, and so countries join together to form a plan of attack knowing Harada’s capabilities. And the search for Peter Stanchek is a big part of it since he was the only one capable of going toe to toe with Harada. So a worldwide campaign is launched to locate Peter and even with  his formidible abilities he won’t be able to hide for long. But with Peter reluctant to rejoin the world, can he truly make a difference against Harada at this point or is Harada correct to be concerned about Peter?

I was blown away by the first issue and instantly became enamored with this series and all related issues. The first issue was my introduction to Toyo Harada and what he did was as impressive as an introduction to a villain in a good while. But it wasn’t just his actions on the carrier but the situation that was created and the contrast to Peter that made the overall story so engrossing. So Harada’s recap..er, reflection on Peter after figuring out that he had to still be alive was excellent character development for me, and also raised Peter’s stature since he actually went toe to toe with him. So the worldwide manhunt for Peter casting him as a hero was understandable in light of the current situation, and I was impressed at the use of tech to attempt to locate him despite the use of his abilities. And so too was part of the plan to neutralize Harada based on the use of specific tech that could suppress a psiot’s abilities. Last issue did an excellent job in showing Harada’s awesome powers making him virtually unstoppable. And this issue did an excellent job in creating a context for his powers in the way the anti-psiot tech was deployed and the concern it created in Harada. This made the plan a legitimate one and created suspense and intensity as the events unfolded. And the action was just as impressive as the first issue with its gorgeous artwork. But what made this issue truly engrossing throughout was the sophisticated way it tackled world events based on Harada’s actions. From the response of the people in the area to his own ideas sprinkled with megalomania, this was all laid out in an entertaining way. Even his team members weren’t generic as personalities were emerging due to the circumstances. Peter wasn’t in this issue as much as last but his character was still being developed as it built on last issue’s portrayal on him making his appearance effective. And that’s why I can’t say enough good things about this issue as so much unfolded without it feeling rushed, stuffed in or confusing. And so I’m just loving everything about this series.

    SUMMARY

Harbinger Omegas #2 is an amazing follow-up issue giving more depth to Harada while crafting a delightfully sophisticated situation one can’t help but be pulled completely in. It’s remarkable how much unfolded in this issue in terms of character development and story progression while also being action-packed. Peter didn’t play a huge role in this issue and I wonder what that means considering there’s only one issue remaining but the world’s response was gripping and suspenseful. And now I wish I had my hands on the final issue already because I can’t wait.
