Harbinger: Omegas #1

  • The good

Electrifying start to the series raising the stakes as high as possible. Great character development and story progression

  • The bad

Not having any super-powered beings present at Harada's "surrender" knowing his capabilities.

  • The ugly

  • Harbinger: Omegas #1 is a new 3-part series following the fallout of Toyo Harada’s secret as a psiot being revealed as well as his many crimes as head of the Harbinger Foundation. And with the massive battle between Harada, his lieutenants and the Renegades taking place for all to see, all the Renegades are now well known despite some of them going into hiding. However, Harada doesn’t have that option as he’s been ordered to surrender and face all the multiple charges against him, including mass murder. The armed forces and media gather around the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush supercarrier anticipating Harada turning himself in, as he promised, but when he lands he has a completely different message. He sends a message to the entire world that it can’t contend with him, and in fact, it needs him to lead it since its current leaders have led it to the brink of extinction. And he declares that he will operate independently from all the laws in the world and any government that opposes him will fall. The armed forces are given the command to attack and Harada and his lieutenants make light work of them and commandeer all the carriers in the area. It seems none can possibly oppose him, however, currently presumed dead, the powerful psiot Peter Stanchek is still alive as are many of the Renegades. Can Peter rise above his demons to help the world put a stop to Harada once and for all?

I was impressed with my introduction to the group in Armor Hunters: Harbinger even if I wasn’t fond of the story taking a weird turn to kill more Mexicans as masked bandits after millions were just killed by the Armor Hunters. However I was fascinated with the characters and their backstory. And yeah, I read the synopsis on the big bad Toyo Harada, and even at the start of this issue when his list of crimes were being read it was interesting but seemed typical for characters of his ilk. But when he started talking and I saw the events that unfolded next I was completely blown away and had to sit back and take it all in as my mind was trying to get a full grasp of what just occurred. If there were ever a memorable introduction to a character and all one embodied, this was it. The writing by Joshua Dysart, which set the tone perfectly, and the artwork by Rafa Sandoval was a stunning 1-2 combo that left me just as shocked as the soldiers and media members who witnessed this series of events. In just 8 pages I was completely engrossed. The introduction to Peter was just as effective but in a different way as the current contrast between him and Harada was clear, and even though his powers, such as being completely undetected whenever he wants, were intriguing, it was his reflection on former members that stood out here as his coping mechanism wasn’t the best, and it revealed more about the character’s mindset and current situation. And the story flowed wonderfully as it segwayed from one situation and character to another, and I can’t say how it will pass for those already familiar with the characters but for me it kept me glued to the pages looking forward to what would occur next. The stakes are already high, and so I have a strong feeling that I’ll enjoy the rest of this series as much as I’ve enjoyed this issue.

    SUMMARY

Harbinger: Omegas #1 is an incredible start to the series that immediately sets the tone for the series and pulls you in completely once Harada starts talking, and raises the stakes to nuclear level. The beuatiful writing by Joshua Dysart and electrifying artwork by Rafa Sandoval makes this issue a very engrossing real as the characters are compelling, the action is intense, and the story progresses extremely well. This issue served as my introduction to Toyo Harada and I was thoroughly impressed, although I wonder why the armed forces were so inadequately prepared for one who could clearly treat their weapons as toys or if that was truly the best they could do. Either way the second issue can’t get here soon enough so I can sit back and enjoy it.
