The Goon: Occasion of Revenge #3

  • The good

Great story developments with some shocking twists. Kid's backstory pays off. Artwork fits so well for this series

  • The bad

Very little action from the main battle is shown. Influence of town not shown at all this issue

  • The ugly

  • The Goon: Occasion of Revenge #3 continues with Goon making arrangements to protect someone important to Don Rigatti and in exchange Goon will receive more manpower in his war against the witches attempting to take over the town. One of the two people Goon taps for this task is Kid Gargantuan, and Goon trusts him because of their deep history. And Kid Gargantuan’s loyalty is no minor thing for to understand this is to know his life story and how he was raised. He was raised by a single mother but his father, an important man, was already married and wanted her to have an abortion because he had no intentions of leaving his wife or having his name sullied. She refused and became full of anger and hatred for the father, and promised him that their son would grow up to know that his father abandoned them and is no good. And that’s exactly how she raised Kid, telling him every day of his life how his father abandoned them but takes care of his other family. And when she died while he was still young, he took this anger with him through his years in the orphanage and became a professional boxer. When he was robbed of a successful career it was Goon who came to his aid. And ever since then Kid has been a loyal member of the crew. But with the “Magpies” determined to take over the town and kill Goon, how much of a difference can Kid make to stop them?

The Goon Occasion of Revenge 3
There are a number of things I’ve been enjoying about this series, and one has been the way the stories of various residents have been incorporated into the issues showing how the town brings out and feeds off the worst in people. It has made the fight for the town that much more intriguing because the importance to the coven is clear. This issue would start off with another story but unlike the previous issues it wouldn’t tie directly to the town feeding off the pain and suffering of Kid. However it wouldn’t be completely irrelevant this issue. Somehow the Coven would become aware of Goon’s agreement with Don Rigatti, and would aim to kill the one being protected. And so Goon would set a plan in motion to counter this attempt. Now, the events would unfold in an entertaining way although it felt more like a proxy war instead of a main large scale battle for the town. This would’ve been interesting at this point in the series but considering the intention seemed to be aiming for the feeling of a large battle it felt less than that. The artwork was stellar so it wasn’t due to that but because none of it was actually shown. But aside from the main battle taking place off the pages in this issue, the strength of this issue would be the story developments, and I won’t give away any spoilers. So whether one likes the results of these developments or not, the way this occurred was engrossing and actually shocking. And with one issue to go I’m dying to see how it’s all wrapped up considering the intense cliffhanger at the end of this one.

    SUMMARY

The Goon: Occasion of Revenge #3 is an engrossing issue due to its story developments that includes shocking twists, and effectively sets the stage for an explosive conclusion to the series. The build up of Kid’s backstory is entertaining and pays off, although I admit I enjoyed the way the previous issues were able to connect the backstories of others to the destructive influence of the town. There wasn’t much action, even though it was alluded to heavily, and so I believe some of that will be shown next issue. Either way I can’t wait to get my hands on the final issue and see what fate awaits Goon and the town.
