Ghost #5

  • The good

Pretty much everything. Intense action, story and character development, and the introduction of two intriguing enemies

  • The bad

Not clear if she was told about the discovery last issue.

  • The ugly

  • Ghost #5 continues with Elisa trying to establish a life after defeating Doctor October, and she’s not having the easiest time doing so. She walks the streets of Chicago at night hoping to come across some criminals, which she does on this particular night, and she defeats them easily, and despite knowing they didn’t stand a chance they predictably tried to attack her still. Although the streets will be safer with those criminals arrested Elisa can’t help but want more of a challenge, and she explains that to Vaughn since she hasn’t encountered any demons in a good while. Meanwhile her other friends have been doing all they can to help her and Sloane has landed her a job at as a freelance writer, and Tommy…, well Tommy has been keeping his eyes on someone he thinks might be an actual demon. He’s Von Ghastly and has had a TV show for decades but recently his show has become much darker and Tommy believes people are actually being killed on it. And since he worked on a TV show before he knows for certain that the special effects on the show wouldn’t be part of a TV show’s budget so all signs point to Von Ghastly being a demon. Seems like Elisa will finally get the challenge she’s been itching for but has she become overconfident in being dismissive of these threats? Maybe so, but considering she missed someone retrieve one of the bullets that passed through her earlier with residue from her on it, things might become more interesting than she’s expecting.

Ghost has become one of the series I look forward to anxiously every month since I’ve been enjoying the character and story from the start. And with the defeat of Doctor October and seemingly every other demon I didn’t have a clue where things would go from here after Elisa’s excellent childhood story. This issue starts off with great action but as Elisa says they were just common criminals so not much of a challenge for her. This take on her mentality was pretty interesting because it would come into play later but it also distracted her so she didn’t see what someone shot through her. This created a very fascinating setup for future events considering Elisa was able to defeat the demons handedly because of their inability to touch her so if someone is seeking to research that then her future fights will be even more interesting. The creation of her new identity was handled very well seeing as there were no reasons to drag that story line out, and even though it might seem cliché for her to become a journalist it provides perfect cover for her, especially in this issue, to investigate strange events and that is the case with Von Ghastly, who is drawn very chillingly by Jan Duursema. An excellent job is done in building him up and all I can say is it’s not disappointing in the least. And so this series continues to impress because you can reread it and appreciate even more how much action, character development, and story progression is there and it’s incredible. The only problem is it’s not entirely clear if what her friends uncovered last issue was imparted on her but aside from that it’s a thrilling read and I can’t wait to see this story arc unfold.

    SUMMARY

Ghost #5 is an incredible issue and I’ve come to expect nothing less from this series at this point as it has some intense action, great character and story development, and creates enough suspense to make me more excited for this story arc than the last one, and with an intriguing subplot I think it’ll exceed the last one. If you still haven’t started this series I recommend you do, even if you start with this issue, because every month it’s an extremely enjoyable ride.
