Ghost #11

  • The good

Great action and artwork once again. Characters deal with Tommy's death in various ways. Ghost in action at end of issue

  • The bad

    Unexpected character development with Vaughn.

  • The ugly

  • Ghost #11 has Elisa and her friends dealing with the death of Tommy, and struggling to piece together how this could’ve happened. It opens up with Elisa using her powers to remove the bullets from Tommy, and hoping that would give him more time before help could arrive. But they’re not out of harm’s way as the mercenary force/cops are still unloading on the crowd. With time being of the essence, Elisa disposes of the remaining forces in the most brutal ways and leaves none of them alive. However, Mr. Park is observing all of this and is satisfied that the message was delivered to Elisa that organized crime won’t tolerate her actions to remove them from the city. But her focus is on Tommy and she attempts to take him to the hospital. She finds an ambulance on the way there and gets them to stop and try to help him the rest of the way. Yet, the paramedics don’t have much hope that he’ll survive despite their attempts and he flatlines before they reach the hospital. One of the paramedics tells her a story of how she saved a friend’s cousin weeks ago, so the paramedic was doing everything she could to save Tommy. It doesn’t provide Elisa with comfort in that moment knowing she has to go back home to tell Sloane and Vaughn, and when she does they’re both devastated. Vaughn storms out feeling it was Elisa’s fault and Sloane has to contact Tommy’s family. With so much death and Elisa believing she was actually trying to do the right thing in stopping organized crime, is this the moment that will destroy the rest of her relationships or will it ultimately bring them all closer together?

Elisa has been a very interesting character, and she has felt very real. Of course, the entertaining use of her powers and the action has been enjoyable but the story has been also. She literally fought her way out of hell and lost her memories in the process of turning into Ghost. And the struggle since regaining them has raised some interesting questions. And Tommy getting shot at the end of last issue, and his death at the very beginning of this issue seriously changes the series status quo. Of course the action at the start of this issue was exciting, and Elisa continues to use her powers without holding back with some amazing results. And this is where I can really appreciate Harvey Tolibao’s artwork because the panels show intense action, and with everything going on, it’s still very clear. And the transition back to Tommy is smooth in both the writing and artwork, and it was touching overall. Reading it did seem like there was barely a moment to absorb the gravity of what just occurred but in a way it was indicative of Elisa’s overall situation. Lately she’s been the one to rush headfirst into battle attempting to solve all the city’s problems almost as fast as she runs away from solving the problems in her personal life. And in a way it was all coming to a head here, or at least starting to. So the moment carried more weight when it was time for her to tell Sloane and Vaughn about Tommy’s death. And the issue had just the right pacing to let the characters try to deal with this in their own ways, and it was revealing for Elisa.
Now, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, and I admit I don’t know the history between some characters outside of this series but a sequence with Vaughn felt perplexing and forced. I don’t know where his angry drunk routine will ultimately go but I’m assuming things won’t automatically get better after the events this issue. And it’s not so much what occurred but with who. So I have to see what occurs next to get a better grasp on this unexpected development but I’m not feeling it yet.
Outside of that the issue picked up more momentum towards the end as Ghost was back in action, and I’m pretty excited about the start of this new status quo.

    SUMMARY

Ghost #11 is overall an entertaining issue and has plenty of touching moments following Tommy’s death with great character development. I’m not really feeling one of the unexpected developments yet considering that character was drunk as a skunk but I have to see what becomes of it. However, Elisa as Ghost is still truly fascinating and it’s always enjoyable to see her in action, and this storyline just keeps getting better. And since she is a well-rounded character, there are many things I’m looking forward to next issue.
