Furious #5

  • The good

The best of this series comes together in this issue with the revelation of Cady's history with Jodie, and how the former acquired her powers. Intense action sequences and satisfying conclusion to series.

  • The bad

One mystery goes unresolved and even though it's intriguing it could only be answered in a future series.

  • The ugly

  • Furious #5 is the conclusion to the series and picks up with Furious and Perfidia fighting high above the clouds as Perfidia seeks to prevent Furious from rescuing the falling little girl caught up in her twisted game. And in attempt to figure out the identity of Perfidia, or maybe just a byproduct of being caught in this life or death situation, Furious recalls the time she came across a young woman being beaten by her pimp and stopped it by hitting him on the back of his head. The two of them were able to escape and Cady instantly became friends with the young woman named Jodie because Cady had more money than she could spend on drugs or whatever but didn’t want to do so alone, and Jodie wanted an escape from the reality of her life just as much as Cady. Perfidia’s words seem to confirm that she is Jodie but how could that be possible when Cady believes Jodie indeed died so many years ago, and how could she have the same powers as her? Perfidia wants to destroy Furious and wants her to fail in saving the little girl in front of the world for killing her prior to this. It all comes to a head for Furious and the result will change her life forever.

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this series from its twist on the classic secret identity conundrum to the interesting protagonist and the situations she’s faced. There was just so much potential in the premise of a former child star with superpowers wanting to personally redeem herself through her actions while struggling with her anger, her past, her powers and the public attention. And with Furious and Perfidia coming face to face with seemingly the same powers it was the perfect setup for everything to come to a head and whether Furious would finally rise above her past and her guilt or succumb to it all. And this issue gets right to it showing how Cady and Jodie met and how their friendship was born out of a shared hardship based on their preferred methods of escaping the harsh realities they faced. And so it was a great touch by Bryan Glass to use the falling girl as a metaphor for Furious’s journey throughout this series and her desperate attempt to save her before it’s too late while there’s nothing Perfidia wants more than for the girl to die. This kept the suspense very high while allowing the reader to root for Furious to overcome this and therefore everything she’s been going through, and it’s indeed exhilarating and touching as well. And the artwork by Victor Santos works very well in all facets whether it’s conveying emotions and inner struggles in panels or creating action sequences exuding with furious energy, it’s the perfect complement to Bryan Glass’s engrossing tale. The reason for Perfidia’s hatred for Furious is revealed and it is convincing when connected to her twisted back story but there is a nagging question that remains and it would be extremely intriguing if there were more issues (and hopefully there will be at some point) but for now it remains a mystery. Aside from that, which I won’t elaborate on due to potential spoilers, all loose ends are tied up regarding Cady’s life, how she acquired her powers and where she can go from this point. And the ending is as satisfying as one could hope for from an entertaining story of one finally being able to move forward in life.

    SUMMARY

Furious #5 is an exhilarating conclusion to the series about the heroine learning to come to terms with her powers, her past, and her real identity and brings it all together in one of the most impressive aerial battles in recent memory using the perfect metaphor for her life. I truly hope this isn’t the last we’ll see of Furious as she’s a protagonist with great character development and there’s still plenty of potential in future story lines for her, and I would still like an answer to one of the mysteries that isn’t fully resolved here. I highly recommend this series and its unique take on a superhero coming to terms with the responsibility of her powers while struggling with her personal life. It’s a ride you can’t miss.
