Furious #4

  • The good

Intriguing twist with Furious and Perfidia. Story progression is a great set up for answering the biggest questions in the series so far.

  • The bad

Perfidia reiterating her desire to destroy Furious almost made appear one-dimensional. Expected more of a direct confrontation this issue

  • The ugly

  • Furious #4 starts off with Cadence being unable to accept the fact that the owner of a convenience store she was just at was murdered, and since she blames herself for not stopping it, she does what she’s accustomed to doing and that’s taking out her frustration on some perps. However this time she’s taking it out on the wrong people, the two boys who were in the store with her, and she’s giving them no quarter despite their repeated efforts to convince her they weren’t involved. Luckily the detective investigating the homicide appears on the scene and he’s the calmest out of the 4 parties as he tries to get Furious to stop amidst the pleas of one of the boys to shoot her. And her stance that they were in the store prior to the murder is dismissed by the detective because the video tape was reviewed and they were not only clean but also witnesses to the one who did commit the crime. He describes the one who did murdered the clerk to her and how it’s related to a string of brutal murders he’s been investigating. The detective might be on her side now as he empathizes with her situation but neither of them are aware that Furious does have a connection to the woman who’s committing the murders, and the latter is ready to unveil her plan to confront Furious and destroy her life. But what is the true connection between the two to the point there would be so much anger, and can Furious survive this latest trap?

This series has been really entertaining to me with its unique twist on the classic hero protecting his/her secret identity dilemma while creating an interesting protagonist with a complex history. And while putting her in very intriguing situations it’s been apparent that one of her worst enemies is her past, or maybe just her view of her own past, and it has fueled her as much as its held her back. This latest enemy, who is clearly twisted and vicious, is practically an embodiment of this past haunting her and one step behind in destroying her, so I’ve been looking forward to this encounter since she was first introduced. This issue starts off in a somewhat curious way with her beating up two who were praising and defending her in the first issue but it served as a way to show Furious’s internal struggle because she didn’t know the two in the store and to me it represented the complex relationship with the public and why the name Furious sticks. And further confirmation is given regarding the twisted nature of her new antagonist, Perfidia, in case it wasn’t already clear, and even though it was a jarring scene with Victor Santos’s effective art, I felt it wasn’t necessary for her to repeat how much she hates Furious and her time is up because enough has been done to create tension and anticipation for this encounter. The way the story unfolded was interesting and some deep questions were raised about how threatening her presence could be to governmental agencies and that added a new wrinkle to the story where I’m more than intrigued to see the end result. I won’t give away any spoilers for this issue but the setup for next issue with the revelations here is more impressive to me than some of the events that occur because I was anticipating more for the confrontation this issue and instead there’s an interesting twist that raises even more questions. I didn’t dislike what occurred because I understand the fan service and maintaining the premise of her relationship with the public but it just means we have to wait at least another issue for the deeper revelations.

    SUMMARY

Furious #4 is another solid issue with some engrossing moments and exciting twists that not only make this issue entertaining but keeps the eagerness for what’s to come next very high. I would have wanted to see more in the way of a direct confrontation finally but the set up here makes it seem as if even more will be resolved, at least for now, than just the two with a shared past facing off. And I can truly appreciate the story that Bryan Glass has woven because he has been successful in this unique take on a classic superhero dilemma.
