Divinity #4

  • The good

Abram became a fully realized character. Interesting setup with followers of Abram

  • The bad

Caged cosmic potential. Abram's use and understanding of his own powers became perplexing

  • The ugly

  • Divinity #4 is the conclusion to the series and has Unity launching their final assault on Abram and his followers. It opens up with Abram having a conversation with his reanimated girlfriend and daughter about why he brought them back to life. His girlfriend, Eva, states that they shouldn’t be back like this because it’s not life  and she doesn’t want this. What Abram doesn’t know is that they’re actually digital recordings produced by Livewire to keep him distracted. Unity was able to overcome his ability to affect their perception of time and trap them. Abram is aware that Unity overcame that ability but he understands that what they want more than anything is to trap him. So while he’s preoccupied with these recordings of his girlfriend and daughter, Unity is trying to slow him down long enough for the containment pod to be fully closed. But Divinity is not alone as the lives of all the followers he’s touched since his return rush to his defense. Can Unity defeat all of Abram’s followers while keeping him contained? Or are they making a mistake attacking him in the first place considering he has attacked no one?

Whenever I received a new issue of Divinity it was always what I read first out of a group of new releases. That’s how engrossing this series has been for me. And the wait to see how this series would conclude and establish Abram’s context in the current Valiant universe has seemed long. Therefore it would be an understatement to say that I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on this issue. And after reading this issue I wouldn’t say it was disappointing because it was good overall but I would say that some of what I wanted to see was postponed until the next series. And as a result, this issue didn’t have as much of an impact as I would’ve wanted. I won’t give away any spoilers at all but considering parts were perplexing more questions were raised about Abram’s capabilities. And that was due to a gap in the explanation of Abram’s life and/or his own understanding of his powers. I’m referring to Livewire’s ability to transmit images of his girlfriend and daughter, and for him to get caught up in it. It was made clear that Abram could receive transmissions based on the ones he received when in space but it wasn’t clear how Livewire could manipulate him let alone know their physical details. And for him not to know the difference between the two seemed inexplicable. Or maybe it was his desire to want to be able to see them again without using his powers that made him become immobile when viewing these recordings. And if that was the case then this issue , the direction of this series, was more personal and smaller in scope than initially thought. So it was successful in establishing Abram as a character, and one who I will look forward to seeing in future series, but less successful in establishing a cosmic presence that changed the Valiant universe. But the former is enough to recommend this series and for me to look forward to the next one.

    SUMMARY

Divinity #4 is a relatively underwhelming conclusion in comparison to how excellent this series has been since the first issue. It’s an enjoyable issue that sheds even more light on Abram’s character and brings the current situation to a close. However, more light isn’t shed on the origin or nature of Abram’s powers, and at times it’s perplexing except the fact that some answers are being delayed until next series. Despite hoping for the series to live up to its bold, cosmic potential only to choose to become a caged bird, I still recommend it as an overall gripping, and exciting story. And Abram is a character I can’t wait to see again.
